Zhiyun gimbals are just getting better and better.
Pros = Quality, battery life, Best balancing ever because you can lock each axis, nice built in stand.. small LCD screen to let you know what mode your in..
Cons = Major con here.. cannot mount a monitor bc of design and no accessories to do so.. purchachased the crane 2 mount to try on this for 39.99 and was unsuccessful.. the only real option is to buy thier accessory for your mobile phone and use wifi to stream.. garbage and laggy as hell..
- Also the customer service number is a joke.. you call get some office in Hawaii with a recording and it takes you straight to a voicemail which is always full..
- Also the app for android is trash and does not work..
Honestly I think the Crane 2 is better than the 3 and I regret not getting the Ronin M over this since you can easily mount things to the handle bars even with third party mounts.. I just don't see how this gimbal can out do anyother gimble.. I does feel better in both hands moving however it is not accessory friendly at all..
Its innovative, the way it can go into underslung mode effortlessly is good!
The fact you can add accessories and focus wheels and zoom wheels etc is really good
The amount of weight you can hold!
The fact you can lock axises amazing
The Bad or the So-So
The app just sucks! It has issues sometimes connecting then when it connects it has to update alot
If you want to control your camera from the dials it has a 1 second delay
Hdmi out to live transmitter feed
Is buggy and laggy i never use that box thats connected
The way you hold it can be a little tiring due to it being weird so you have to rest it alot
The way you put it down is ackward due to you have to use the stand as a handle then when you put it down you have to unopen the handle, trust me it gets a little ackward fast
The fact you can not buy exact replacement batteries here on amazon kinda suck
Battery life is a little hit or miss take it with a grain of salt
Packaging is well done. External box is standard photos of the item and included accessories. Inside the box is a heavy density Styrofoam case that has cut outs that will fit the gimbal and accessories. There is a quick start guide that explains how to balance the gimbal. For more info on all the features you have to download the PDF from their website.
The gimbal itself feels solid and has the feel of a professional product that will hold up to use. I really like the gimbal locks which keep the camera from swinging all over the place while balancing. I found using a youtube video helpful to speed up the learning process to properly balance the camera. Once the camera was balanced it turned on and instantly started in the first person stabilization mode. Total set up time on the first effort was around 8 minutes, but will be much faster now that I know the process. Its very straight forward.
I used the app to connect the gimbal-camera to my Pixel XL. It worked, but took a couple of tries (mostly with resets and forcing the phone to make a connection to the gimbal via wifi). Once connected the camera's screen was streaming crystal clear and the gimbal could be controlled via the phone. Personally I found it easier to use the gimbals controls directly than via the phone, but it would allow a second person to help with the shoot if needed since the connection is wireless. I have barely scratched the surface of the different modes and tricks so I will review those later, but in the few trials with it I was very happy. The ergonomics have been well thought out and this gimbal is very comfortable to hold and carry. The controls are well placed, except you better be right handed if you want the focus wheel control (which is glow in the dark btw). Video was nice a smooth in my brief sample so far. Great tool and can't wait to explore what it has to offer.
I really hope someone steps it up in the gimbal world and releases a great gimbal with ergos like this, that doesn't rely on an app for no reason. For nearly $1k I should be able to use an onboard lcd to access all the features.
Anyways, if you're an android user, from what I can find online, and my own experience across 3 devices, you're SOL.
Also, the case is trash quality for the cost of this gear. The Crane 2 case is much nicer. At the moment the Crane 2 is still the better deal by far, but I wish a competitor would step in and put these gimpbals to shame.
After I use the Zhiyun Crane 3 Lab in a couple of shoots, I'm quite happy on how it performs. It is a little jerky if you change opposite direction too quickly but after a few tries and getting used to it will perform as its supposed to. Wireless image transmission lags a little, I hope that it can be fixed with a firmware update. The touch control via the app performs well, it is able to control all my camera's setting as well as the Crane 3 Lab's control.
I have yet to test out the zoom focus, but the wheel feels smooth and solid, glows in the dark too useful when shooting in the dark. The overall build of this gimbal is solid and premium, except for the buttons on the handle as they feel very plasticky especially the center dial button. The Zhiyun TransMount Phone Holder with Crown Gear (purchased separately) feels solid yet light and it can hold an Iphone XS max with a thick (spigen) phonecase with a bit of stretch.
Hope this helps in your purchase.
