George’s first book, Hired: Cut Your Career Search Time in Half, is based on his own experience—when he found himself facing two job transitions in less than three years. From both his military training and operations background, he learned that career transition also has a process. He became a student, listening, taking copious notes, and asking vital questions to many people that he met.

George started his career in the US Army serving in 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, additionally in Wurzburg, Germany, and Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq in Support of Desert Shield/Desert Storm. He credits this experience with his leadership training, positive attitude through adversity, and his ability to overcome major obstacles. In addition, George has 25 years in Global Operations managing working in four industries: Automotive, Contract Electronic Manufacturing, Industrial Automation, and Capital Equipment Manufacturing. He is passionate about helping individuals and businesses become better.

George has had three international assignments in Germany, Thailand and China, and these have increased his knowledge of global and diversified cultures.

He credits his strong belief in God and the support of his family for his success. His wife of 26 years, Kerry, is very loving and supportive, as are their three beautiful and successful children: Mason, Devin, and Aislynn. He loves spending his free time with his family boating, traveling, and golfing, plus he’s an avid runner.

George also does individual coaching, consults with businesses and business leaders, as well as speaks on topics such as developing next generational leaders in organization, strong teams, driving improvements within companies.

On April 16, 2021 I had to start searching for a new job post-pandemic. During this past year I had spent time, meeting on average, 5-7 people per week, and learned that a great many (more than 70%) were in their own job transition. Their stories ranged from inspirational to downright borderline depressing; from the resiliency that they mastered to the health and financial challenges they faced. Looking back, I’d say I was fortunate that I never completely stopped my networking when I had landed my last job.

Having written a book about career transition, Hired! Cut Your Career Search Time in Half, put a certain added pressure on me when I was out looking for my next job. I was worried more about not finding a new career opportunity in a certain amount of time (hence the title of my last book), than finding a job at all. During the first few weeks when I was networking, if I had a nickel for each time someone said, “There’s a good book called Hired! that you should read”, I could have had a nice island vacation.

I questioned whether now in a post-pandemic period, could I apply the same process that helped me land my last job in half the time? For those I have been networking with this past year, it took about 7 months on average to land their next career opportunity. Did the career-transition landscape change so much during this pandemic that my process would be obsolete? It was quickly reinforced that the process became even more valuable and timely. The book outlines all the key things to consider from the time you left your last job to the time you get the offer for your next job. However, a few things had more significance than the others:


You have to harness a positive mindset (even when you don’t feel like it). Let’s face it. Being out of a job is not very motivating by itself, but put that on top of a pandemic when people were not willing to meet, etc.—you can feel somewhat overwhelmed and helpless. However, you have to find a way to RISE again. As I have learned over the past 5 years, you have to work at becoming tenaciously optimistic.

Tony Robbins talks about a process of “Priming” each morning. He elaborates that we have over 80 muscles in our face, however; this past year we had one look, and we simply did not change facial expression—which did not show a welcoming and inviting view to others.

Daily Schedule:

Your daily schedule is key to your success. What you do and how you do it each day will get you either closer to getting your next job or farther from your goal. My book, HIRED! Cut Your Career Search Time in Half, goes into more detail on outlining “YOUR DAY” because your day will be different than my day. Also, getting your next job your next job faster will depend on how you evaluate those days and make the right adjustments.

Network plan

This is not to be left to chance. Creating a network plan for potential companies, with titles of people that may either influence or be potential hiring managers, is critical for getting your next job faster. This includes your own Key Personal Indicators (KPIs)—mine were from my process and manufacturing background. For example, reach out to 10-15 new connections in those criteria that were listed previously (CEO, VP of Sales, etc.), either through email, LinkedIn, etc. The more you get your name and skills out into the hands and minds of those who either might have an opportunity or know of a hiring manager looking for those—the faster you will land your next job.

Your clear “Ask”

This comes down to what I like to call two swim lanes; first what is the ideal job you are looking for (again my book helps you clarify). The other swim lane is the additional people you want to be introduced to that may influence you closer to getting your next job. For example, I was looking for a senior operations job for a small/mid-size manufacturing/technology company. I needed to connect with CEO, CFO and Board Members—people that may be looking for someone like me.

Value Proposition

When networking meetings switched to Zoom/Teams/Skype, it was more important than ever to state your value proposition (quick 30 seconds or less) statement that makes you unique and different. This should also be focused on the person you are networking/interviewing. Your “traditional” elevator pitch is long, uninspiring, and doesn’t capture the “Wow Factor” within you that the listener is looking for.

Personal Board of Advisors

I read this powerful message in Bill George’s book, True North, where he explains that to have these people throughout his life has always helped him make better personal and business decisions. So why not me? If I am going to run myself like the CEO of You, Inc., I am going to need a Personal Board of Advisors. These are 3-5 people that are a complement to you (don’t have everyone come from your background, i.e., all operations folks as in my example) but who will listen, challenge you, and help you.

Creating the Wow Factor at every step of the interview process

Once you get the momentum and start to interview, its critical in this challenging and competitive environment to be able to stand out at each step in the interview process—even on the initial phone screen. My book outlines in detail how you can, but there are some steps you would think would be well-known, but are not. Example #1: Showing up on a phone screen call in business attire so you will come across more confident and on point. #2: Creating a value proposition geared to the company based on the job in your first face-to-face meeting, and #3: Creating a 90-day plan.


It was 35 days from my last day to when multiple offers rolled in during a POST-PANDEMIC work environment (40 days total to when I started my new job!). Within that timeframe, I networked with 112 people and interviewed with seven different companies, all of which were still in the process when I received those multiple offers. This is proof that the book and process I outlined before the pandemic still works, perhaps even more now. Yes, it takes determination, hustle, and a tenacious optimistic view.
