'Heat: Elements of Chemistry' (Hypothesis book 2) turned up the heat on Martin and Kaitlyn's dynamic. Both young, fallible and inexperienced (in very different ways), they set upon a journey of discovery, warts and all - about themselves, each other, backstories, their physical/emotional intimacy, relationships and ... life.
The ideal, romantic, private setting of a Caribbean island was perfect for the two lovers to explore their budding relationship, start to take emotional risks and develop trust. Could the blissful, holiday escape atmosphere last?
The feel of 'Heat' was intense, yet still very much Reid-like. The characters remained as lovable/relatable as before and the plot took us forward with clever, skilled, witty and communicative writing. But expect confronting circumstances, complications, changes and an angsty cliffhanger from 'Heat', too.

The whole book is about 2 weeks in the life of kaitlyn and Martin. The second book in their story and highly recommend you read them in order. This pivots from soul searching to soul destroying from inexperience to experienced in all matters of the physical and feelings. Ends on a cliffhanger.

I love Penny Reid novels in general but this one is brilliant. Martin and Kaitlyn's adventure continues in Heat and all isn't as it first seemed. As the couple get to know each other more there are clearly players in the shadows who have impacted more upon the couple than first thought. It's those same very people who are to blame for the cliffhanger ending.
Things I loved about the book:
- The development of Martin's character. I love a broken character, all those flaws and nuances are brilliant to read and in this book we see more of who he really is underneath the mask. His speech on the colour black, his challenging of Kaitlyn's perspective and his desperate search for a way to deal with his past all made him my favourite character in this book.
- The development of Kaitlyn's character. Now, I liked Kaitlyn in the first novel, but in this one I really didn't. Here you find out more about her and why she's studying what she is and also how she prioritises. Whilst I respect her choices in the novel, I think that she sells both herself and Martin short a number of times. Here's the thing though, because of the way the story moves and the revelations about the motives of the characters and the manipulations that they respond to, I'm looking forward more to Capture because of it. I want Kaitlyn to have a chance to change and to make a brave choice.
- The introduction to the parents. Well, they certainly helped to explain a few things. Martin's Father and Step-mother appear in this one and we get to meet Senator Joss Parker.
- The baseline message of the book. Now I'm going out on a limb here, but for me one of the key messages of the book was that regardless of the packaging, manipulation is still manipulation. Whether you think that it's for a noble cause or for purely for selfish reasons, manipulating people to do your bidding isn't ok. We see this scenario played out with a few different sets of characters and it's amazing how the characters perceive the same situations so differently.
- No Touch Tuesday, Wet-n-Wild Wednesday and Tounge-and-Teeth Thursday. They're brilliant.
- The rowing scenes. I did rowing for a while and loved that Penny brought it to life on the pages realistically.
Overall, definitely a 5 star read.

Kaitlyn has become one of my favourite female book characters, I just love her. She is funny, smart, sincere, honest, and a little naive - yet remains true to herself.
This part of the 'Hypothesis' series is a good read and I enjoyed Kaitlyn and Martin's journey to this point, even if I am feeling sad a present.
Penny Reid has certainly created a lovely tale of two young people trying to find love and themselves in the midst of some trying events and unfeeling people.
Definitely worth a read.

Really enjoyed reading how Martin & Kaitlyn get together, and it all was going so well, until the outside world came in and then it wasn't... So I have to find out what happens next in Capture, I'm lucky it's already available

Queue the sob fest, someone hand me the tissues! Such highs and lows in this book. Excited to read the next book. Another well written story, relatable characters and great sense of humour.

Awesome series, made me laugh so hard I got puzzled looks from my neighbour even though my doors and windows were closed (I know better than to go out into the world when reading Penny Reid books). If you haven't read anything by this great author yet you are missing out.

Heat which is the second book in the Elements of Chemistry series, starts off right where Attraction left us hanging. Thank god because I was dying to know what happens next.
"It made my heart swell, it made it hard to breathe, it made the Bunsen burner in my pants go on alert level one million, and it made me willing to forgive him for almost anything."
Heat really explores the depth that Katy & Martin's current stance as a couple and where they want to be at. Martin really wants things and is leaning on Katy to cave but Katy is so new to relationships and is scared that these feelings between them both might be moving to fast. Not only is this book a lot of fun, it also brings the heat factor. Reid develops the relationship between Kaitlyn and Martin during the one week. this could come off as cheesy and unrealistic but she manages to keep the emotions and growth as real as possible. I was definitely sold.
”What is attraction? I can’t give you a list of reasons why I react to you like I do. This isn’t an equation to balance. You’re the one I’m always thinking about. It’s you. It just is.”
I had such a book hangover after reading this and I knew there was a terrible cliffhanger and it was coming but I wasn't prepared for it at all. I certainly didn't expect to be crying like a baby!

Is it possible to fall in love completely within a week? It's possible for Kaitlyn, who has been whisked away by the handsome Martin to a Caribbean island for spring break.
In this book, Kaitlyn and Martin's relationship develops. After finding out that Martin wasn't getting it on with the blonde at the party, they agree to go slow and find out more about each other. There's no touch Tuesday, wet and wild Wednesday and so forth.
Kaitlyn opens up her heart in a way she has never has before. Martin helps her to find her passion for music and for him. Martin learns that she is the only person he can trust, and tell his secrets.
But they fragile new relationship reaches breaking point when Kaitlyn finds out about Martin's dad's plot to ruin her mother. Can they survive their parents' battle?
Once again a really good read, held my interest until the end and most importantly, I didn't skip any pages.
So why didn't I give this book five stars? Money people, it's all about the Betty 2s. I think, for what this is, it's overpriced. 30% of this book is plugging other books and it ends in a cliffhanger which I absolutely hate. A fiver is a lot when compared to other kindle books and the prices that they sell for, therefore I have an expectation that I will receive a complete story for my money. So I have to wag my finger at Ms Reid and say 'could do better'. Enjoy peeps 😉

Recommend it, if its your style of book! Its clever and cute BUT... Why couldn't they be written as one book?! I bought the series and was a bit annoyed that I spent 3x the amount for what should have been one full length novel.

A heart wrenching tale of love, discovery, loyalty and ethics. I know it's a good book when I catch myself mirroring the gasps and dialogue of the protagonists out loud. I look forward to the conclusion in book three.
