I have many Greek dictionaries and lexicons but this one, BDAG as it is affectionately known, is different and more valuable for several reasons.
First, it is different from other NT Greek lexicons by covering much more than the NT - it also covers the Septuagint and a large amount of 1st century Koine Greek literature. This is invaluable in the numerous places where a word only occurs once in the NT so its meaning cannot be determined from the NT alone- its meaning, and more importantly it range of meanings can be shown from the survey of occurrences in other sources.
Second, of the available NT lexicons, BDAG is probably the most respected dictionary because of its wide survey of much literature outside of the NT. In short, it is often regarded as the "last word" in Greek meanings.
Each word entry has not just a definition but a whole article about its meanings and usages and how this varies in some contexts and word associations. This lexicon is indispensable for NT serious scholars.

Described as an "invaluable reference work" (Classical Philology) and "a tool indispensable for the study of early Christian literature" (Religious Studies Review) in its previous edition, this new updated American edition of Walter Bauer's Wörterbuch zu den Schriften des Neuen Testaments builds on its predecessor's staggering deposit of extraordinary erudition relating to Greek literature from all periods. Including entries for many more words, the new edition also lists more than 25,000 additional references to classical, intertestamental, Early Christian, and modern literature.
In this edition, Frederick W. Danker's broad knowledge of Greco-Roman literature, as well as papyri and epigraphs, provides a more panoramic view of the world of Jesus and the New Testament. Danker has also introduced a more consistent mode of reference citation, and has provided a composite list of abbreviations to facilitate easy access to this wealth of information.
Perhaps the single most important lexical innovation of Danker's edition is its inclusion of extended definitions for Greek terms. For instance, a key meaning of "episkopos" was defined in the second American edition as overseer; Danker defines it as "one who has the responsibility of safeguarding or seeing to it that something is done in the correct way, guardian." Such extended definitions give a fuller sense of the word in question, which will help avoid both anachronisms and confusion among users of the lexicon who may not be native speakers of English.
Danker's edition of Bauer's Wörterbuch will be an indispensable guide for Biblical and classical scholars, ministers, seminarians, and translators.

Every rule and mechanism involved in NT Greek word formation and its meaning/nuances is in this book.I cannot think of a more exhaustive and extensive lexicon than the BDAG.

Le vrai “dictionaire” - the bees knees
Reviewed in France on 16 January 2018Verified Purchase
J’utilise la version avant depuis 1977 et c’était excellent. Version (edition) 3 est meillure :
1. Elle utilise une plus grande sélection de source-textes ;
2. La présentation est plus claire – plus lisible ;
3. Même le papier, le couleur et la fonte est plus acceptable aux yeux.
Mais, il conserve le même mise en page comme son prédécesseur.
Avertissement : on a besoin de parler le bien anglais pour utiliser ce dictionnaire.
It really is good and gets good reviews generally by scholars. I guess there are better lexicons out there (such as the full Liddell & Scott, maybe) but you'd pay a premium for them. If you are going to do serious study of the New Testament, you need more than something that simply gives a meaning. This will provide an insight to nuances of use and a degree of the spread of meaning over time and types of litterature.
Highly recommended.

It's The Standard
Reviewed in Canada on 22 September 2012Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I am a ministry student and this is an important foundational building block for every theological library. This book is simply the industry standard lexicon for Greek biblical translation. I'm not aware of anything else that comes close for Koine Greek and this seems to be what everyone I know turns to. Having said that, if you're not strong in Greek (or have none) you'll need some help getting to the root word you're looking for. You could use
The Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible Spanish Edition: Reina-Valera 1960 Translation
which is quite helpful and/or
ANALYTICAL LEXICON TO THE GREEK NEW TESTAMENT
to get you to where you can use this lexicon. I use both. All of the other aides I have seen include definitions but this lexicon is the source. It probably won't become obsolete for a very long time and so is probably a once-per-career buy that every minister should have in their back pocket. You probably won't use it on a weekly basis but over a career it will be very useful.
