Product Description

Doing business in the digital age

The Great Fragmentation: And Why the Future of All Business is Small is a business survival manifesto for the technology revolution. As the world moves from the industrial era to the digital age, power is shifting and fragmenting. Power is no longer about might and ownership; power in a digital world is about access. Existing businesses need to understand this shift and position themselves to survive and thrive in an environment where entrepreneurs and start-ups enabled by access to technology are genuine threats.

Author Steve Sammartino is widely regarded as a thought leader on the subject of technology and business, and helps companies transition from industrial-era thinking to the mindset and processes required to compete in today's digital marketplace. The Great Fragmentation shows how technological changes such as Big Data, gamification, crowdfunding, Bitcoin, 3D printing, social media, mashup culture and artisanal production will forever change business and the way we live our lives.

  • Examine how the digital era has altered where we work, how we work, where we live and what we do
  • Discover how the digital era has impacted social and economic structures, including educational systems, financial systems and government policy
  • Understand that the social media and collecting 'friends' is just the tip of the iceberg in a digital business environment

Weaving together insights from business, technology and anthropology, The Great Fragmentation provides both corporations and entrepreneurs with a playbook for the future of work, life and business in the digital era.

I don't gush about books, normally, but Steve's is a must-read. I've been struggling with pulling together the different threads of the impact of technology on my clients, typically high-performers in new roles. Steve's overview is put forward with his typical passion and conviction. I don't agree with it all - big organisations I'm afraid are going to be with us for some time, as the advantages they bring are important. But several points are evolving fast:
Connecting over knowing - a tough one for those of us who have invested in 'knowing stuff' but not so much in connecting that stuff where it's needed.
Mashing. When Marketing meets Physics meets Culture new organisational, career and societal outcomes happen. Or Finance, Psychology and Engineering. Get your head around that and your new career can open up. Steve's way of mashing constitutes fun but pointed experiments with the whole system - sending and retrieving a satellite; building a car (that travels at 20kph) from Lego - that illustrate the possibilities.
The Two Worlds are One World. I've been looking at the cloud as analogous to another planet with its own laws of Physics & that's been a kind of cute way of bringing serious issues into discussions about careers and elite executive performance. But Steve's more accurate in showing how the 'two planets' are intertwined. The virtual world - as he has demonstrated - directly impacts our real world. The communities are real communities. The objects made (including jewellry for his young daughter on a 3D printer) are real objects.

A refreshing and easily-read book. But no veneer. There's plenty of depth and evidence for Steve's points and it's going to be a book I'll read slowly too. I'm going to be referring to it whether my counterpart is a guru or a Luddite!

Nobody thinks the way Steve does - I first discovered this when I stumbled on Steve's must-read Startup Blog and his post about bees... But that's a story for another day...

First and foremost, Steve's visionary ideas as shared on his blog are given a lot more room to shine in the format of this book. And with more space, Steve gives the reader plenty more to think about as we ponder the future, our place in it and our plans for innovation, collaboration and success. Everything is in flux and if you want to understand why, how it impacts you and how you can leverage this change... Read this book!

I have been lucky enough to spend some time with Steve and this book is exactly how he thinks!

A great collection of ideas, thoughts and "value bombs" in every chapter!

If your interested in the future of business and what you can do to prepare... this book is perfect for you. No longer can we take for granted the full time job and security.
