I'm afraid I didn't finish reading this book. It was no doubt well written, but I found it hard to stomach the very explicit nature of the violence, the sexual content etc. I enjoy crime/thrillers that make the mind work at following mystery and intricate puzzles of behaviour on both sides. However, I did not feel the obvious descriptive ability of the writer were put to best use. Crime (or at least the telling of it) doesn't have to be sordid and sick to be appreciated.

The story line kept the reader intrigued throughout the story. It wasn’t a matter of who dun it more of how was the killer going to be caught. Well recommended

Great read

Good read. I just found it a little too unbelievable, 2 young women from a loving stable family turning into a prostitute and a junkie. It seemed like 2 different books to me. One before the girls death and the other, after. But the book is
Well written and interesting. The author has a tendency to make you feel sympathy for the killer in his books because of the tragic things that have happened in their life. Quite disturbing at times, but it wouldn't be as good a book as it is without those parts.

I enjoyed reading this story and got engrossed with the characters. I must admit that I found the plot a little unbelievable as well as the end result in the disposal of the parts. However I bonded with the main character Stanton and could feel the way his job was getting to his unhealthy status. The author has a great writing style that flows easily and makes reading much simpler. I injoyed his style so much I have purchased and read his other two books which are better than this. Recommend reading.

This book really gripped me!

Thank you to the author and Goodreads for the opportunity of reading this book free of charge in return for an honest review.
I have really enjoyed reading this book, and when I started, for the first half a dozen pages I wasn't sure I was going to! But then if gripped me and I had difficulty putting it down! It's very descriptive, and really gory in places, not leaving a lot to the imagination, but it fits very well with the book and the style it's been written in. Everything, from the characters to the flow of the story was very real, and the ending, although I had already worked some of it out ( no I'm not going to spoil it), was really well done. In fact I think the fact that I had worked out some of the reveals and who was really who, added to the thrill of how it finishes.
I look forward to reading more from this author, both in this series and others to follow, thank you.

Pretty good, probably 3.5*

This wasn't bad - but there were places where I skipped paragraphs. Especially when too much detail was gone into in autopsies. Not that I'm squeamish - just that I got bored with the descriptions of the injuries...there's a fine balance between painting a picture that puts you in the room - and sounding a bit like a text book.
**SPOILER ALERT**
There's not really much suspense / tension in the storyline because we know, to a greater extent, who is doing what. We don't know the why - but it made it a bit less of a page turner for me.
I did like the way the author used chapters though. Instead of, for example, a character using a conversation with someone to paint in part of the story, there would be a new chapter started and then you read what actually went on in real time. I liked that.
Pretty good - and I'd probably read this author again

Errors That Can Be Overlooked, Though
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2012Verified Purchase
Read this in just over a day as I couldn't put it down ! It's set in Halifax in Canada and not many of the books I read are Canadian ones, I must say. I loved this though.
It was all about a nice detective called Allan Stanton and his search for a serial killer on his patch. Sounds like any old murder 'n' mayhem story but the writer really takes you there and doesn't gloss over things like an autopsy and you feel like you're there attending it too !! It's a very detailed book and I usually zone out in books with too much description but not this one.
I guessed who it could be less than 20% in but that didn't spoil it in the least as there were plenty of twists and turns throughout.
There was a repeated apostrophe error that was annoying writing parent's a lot yet sometimes getting it right !!
He did mention in the book that serial killers usually come from dysfunctional families which is scary as there are more of those every day in our society. However, he said Ted Bundy wasn't from one. I disagree as I'm sure Bundy was brought up thinking his grandmother was his mum and his mum was his his sister.......I might be wrong but I'm sure it's the case so he should be lumped in with the others !!
Usually I won't give a book 5 stars in Goodreads if there are errors but had to overlook them in this one's case as it was so good !!

Can't remember if this was a cheap and cheerful BookBub offer...but I am so glad that I found it,
Alan Stanton is a very believable person in his own right.
You can see the type of person he is....not an all singing all dancing super hero but a Detective, with a life going on in the background while he is trying to solve crimes.
Trying being the operative word, sadly his latest case has to be put on a back burner as yet again there is no evidence to get a conviction....
This book drew me into the core of it and when I had finished it I knew that I must read book two in the series....
Anyone who loves twists and turn with a gritty reality will love this book and like me with become addicted...

Not tense enough to hold my attention

Grave Situation is a well plotted police procedural where Lieutenant Allan Stanton searches for the murderer of a prostitute and a security guard who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. There is much to admire in this book - the research is well done with both police and autopsy procedure, even if the latter is a little gruesome, the death notification scenes are sensitively handled and this is one of the few novels I have read where you really see their impact on the family and the same goes for the impact the job had on Allan's marriage which I thought was some powerful writing - and yet, I never felt gripped. It is a novel which is easy to put down and come back to later. Is it because you know who the killer is early on and are only left with the why or is it because the plot meanders a bit through the killer's upbringing, Allan's failed marriage and too many examples of real life serial killers' modus operandi? I think it is a combination of all three that lead to a lack of tension. I think it is a fair start to the series and I would like to read more about Allan Stanton as he is a good character so I won't be writing the series off just yet.
