'Gracie Secret' by Jill Childs was a dramatic and highly emotional narrative featuring mainly, maternal love. While predictable at times, the author used mystery, twists and a spiritual element to add interest and contrast.
The story was told mainly via Jen's (the mother) POV and began with four year-old daughter, Gracie's car accident and subsequent coma. Fear, panic and devastation quickly turned to fury when it was discovered that Ella (Jen's ex husband, Richard's, girlfriend) was the driver. Gracie's medical state improved and then, her memories about the leadup to the incident were insightful.
As the mother figure, Jen was well-defined, relatable and sympathetic.
I found the plotting was mainly strong, but by around 50% my interest waned for a short time. The storyline picked, however and gained momentum once again. Jill's writing was gripping and clever for the most part.
'Gracie Secret' left me feeling quite raw and reflecting on how fragile life can be. It was especially agonising to consider the (possible) loss of a beloved child.
