The highly-ambiguous Dennis Milne is a central character of unusual moral complexity. Unlike Villanelle in "Killing Eve," he cares about whom he kills, and bitterly regrets getting it wrong. He wants to side-step the cumbersome legal process that leaves the guilty free and the innocent dead.

His journey is by turns sad, exciting, awful. Life is fragile, love is fragile, In some places, life is cheap.

This is not a run-of-the-mill police procedural, nor a simple shoot-'em-up thriller. It's a story of the depths of corruption and the profound problems of those whose mission is to correct it. Not everyone will like it - but it's a terrific read.

Kernick's books are based on what he learns from his contacts in the police and security services, says the blurb. So why do they read like a sado-masochistic Boys' Own adventure story with ladles of sex thrown in? There's too much 'and with one bound Jack was free' unlikeliness and far too often surprising allies spring to help.
However,the narrative drive is good,the moral ambiguities of policing a relatively free society receive some attention as are the dangers and benefits of society wide surveillance. The characters are mostly well-drawn and convincing, especially the morally dubious investigators.
All in all, I'm enjoying Kernick's with thei exploration of crime and punishment in a world of moral relativism and intense me-me-me behaviours.

Simon Kernick writes terrific plots. This is the second book in the Dennis Milne saga and just as thrilling as the first. I'm currently reading the 3rd book which is very exciting and I hope won't be the last in this series.

Couldn't put it down, Milne is the ultimate anti-hero, a man with a dark past, a dark present and probably future, but at the end of the day he has compassion and empathy for the right people. A ruthless investigator to the end. Kernick puts just enough pace into his writing to keep it interesting without giving away the ending. Recommend highly.
