The highly-ambiguous Dennis Milne is a central character of unusual moral complexity. Unlike Villanelle in "Killing Eve," he cares about whom he kills, and bitterly regrets getting it wrong. He wants to side-step the cumbersome legal process that leaves the guilty free and the innocent dead.
His journey is by turns sad, exciting, awful. Life is fragile, love is fragile, In some places, life is cheap.
This is not a run-of-the-mill police procedural, nor a simple shoot-'em-up thriller. It's a story of the depths of corruption and the profound problems of those whose mission is to correct it. Not everyone will like it - but it's a terrific read.

About the Author
Simon Kernick lives near London and has two young children. The research for his novels is what makes them so authentic. His extensive list of contacts in the police force has been built up over more than a decade. It includes long-serving officers in Special Branch, the National Crime Squad (now SOCA), and the Anti-Terrorist Branch, all of whom have plenty of tales to tell.

Real London....

Kernick's books are based on what he learns from his contacts in the police and security services, says the blurb. So why do they read like a sado-masochistic Boys' Own adventure story with ladles of sex thrown in? There's too much 'and with one bound Jack was free' unlikeliness and far too often surprising allies spring to help.
However, the narrative drive is good, the moral ambiguities of policing a relatively free society receive some attention as are the dangers and benefits of society wide surveillance. The characters are mostly well-drawn and convincing, especially the morally dubious investigators.
All in all, I'm enjoying Kernick's with thei exploration of crime and punishment in a world of moral relativism and intense me-me-me behaviours.

Fast paced

Great read very fast paced.trying to solve an old murder case to solve the murder of his old partner when he was in the force, takes a lot out of Dennis Milne. Mentally and physically. Time will tell if he come through it all. With someone very close to him working in the background against him.

Good holiday read but needs focus.

Enjoyed the book. I've said a good holiday book because of the need to keep track of characters and their interface. Best read in one or two chunks, hence the holiday book recommendation.
Probably me, but I thought the ending predictable, hence no 5th star.

Heart racing!

Really enjoyed this book and can't decide if he is good or bad. Maybe a good man that does bad things for good reasons. It's fast paced, heart racing and impossible to guess what's coming next, never mind what the end might be.
Sometimes it seems a bit far fetched, like Arnold (I'll be back) he takes so many beatings but keeps going.
