Too technical for me

This book is well enough written in terms of the author's use of language, and has a decent plot, characters etc., but getting through it is a bit of a slog as Cross gets bogged down with details - minutiae, even - of the psychology of serial killers. If that interests you, that content is probably fascinating, as it is clearly based on extensive research, but I found myself skip-reading a lot of passages.

This is an excellent start to an interesting crime series. Dr Kate Hanson is a criminal psychologist who works with the unsolved crimes unit of West Midlands police. A skeleton is discovered beside a motorway and Kate suspects the murderer may have been responsible for other murders in the area. The skeleton is soon identified as Molly James who disappeared ten years ago.

What follows is a fascinating and painstaking investigation which carefully pieces together the evidence necessary to convict a cunning and resourceful criminal. I found it compelling story which is well written and has an authentic feel to it because of the author's own background.

If you enjoy crime stories which don't have too much bad language or graphic violence then you may enjoy this one. I liked Kate as a character and I thought the sometimes spiky relationship between Kate and her police colleagues was very well done. I felt as though I was a fly on the wall in their office. Well worth reading and I'm about to start the second book in the series.

I am a huge lover of crime fiction and this author was recommended to me on one of my trips to UK (I live in Sicily). As the author's first book this is a fine debut novel. I got into it very quickly, it moves along at a good pace and the characters are a great mix and very believable. As a single parent myself I can relate to Kate's worries concerning her work/life balance. A J Cross is spot on with this, as she is with all aspects of Kate's two jobs. Having been born and brought up 4 miles from where the bodies were found, a trip down the Halesowen Bypass will never be the same again. It also has a great twist at the end - never saw that coming. I am looking forward to meeting many of these diverse characters again, I love the way they interact with one another. This is a very well written book, good grammar and perfect spelling, so absolutely nothing to interfere with my enjoyment of it. It also has a nice cat.

I downloaded this book by chance as I'm desperate for new authors to read. As its set in my local area I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it after feasting on US fiction for so long. How surprised am I? The quality of the writing is high, I'm reading thriller, emotions and so much more. I'm so excited to discover more about this author and highly recommend.

I struggled to find the way into this, largely because so many characters were introduced in the first two chapters. The location was fascinating as I'm a girl from the Midlands so identifying with the sense of place became a central interest. Unsolved Cold Cases have developed as a popular line in crime fiction and Kate Hanson was a feisty woman collecting evidence, not always listening to her colleagues with a full ear, but nevertheless convincingly argumentative in her conclusions. Enjoyable but I'm not sure I shall revisit the series.

Fast paced, a few red herrings, a lot of technical detail and well developed characters made this one of my best reads for some time. I hope there will be many more books in the series.
