About the Author

Born in Yokohama, Japan, on September 9, 1903, Phyllis A. Whitney was a prolific author of award-winning adult and children's fiction. Her sixty-year writing career and the publication of seventy-six books, which together sold over fifty million copies worldwide, established her as one of the most successful mystery and romantic suspense writers of the twentieth century and earned her the title "The Queen of the American Gothics."

Whitney resided in several places, including New Jersey. She traveled to every location mentioned in her books in order to better depict the settings of her stories. She earned the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award in 1988, the Agatha in 1990, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of Midland Authors in 1995. Whitney was working on her autobiography at the time of her passing at the age of 104.

I had read a lot of these books years ago, and always liked them. My mother and Grandmother were fans.
Since those years, I have read other romantic suspense novels, but we're put out by the graphic sex and smut thrown in everywhere. I found them to be insulting to my intelligence.
But Phyllis Whitney is truly a quality writer who thoroughly develops her characters and surroundings. She creates tension, suspense and mood through these characters, sort of like a modern Agatha Christi, in that it is difficult to guess "who-dunnit".
Take time to enjoy and let the characters develop so that you can wrap yourself up in the mystery as it unfolds.

Slow start but a good gothic read

I'm slowly reading all of this author's books and I'm happy to have found them. This book had a slow start with an h who was hard to warm up to. The h is a journalist who longs to write a book. She resigns her job and goes to East Hampshire to interview a reclusive artist. There is also a hidden motive in wanting to interview this artist because somehow she believes she is related to her. The h was adopted when she was 2 months old and has been unable to trace her birth parents. The only clue she has is the gold unicorn pendant she was wearing when she was given to her adoptive parents. She had a wonderful life with her parents but has been adrift since they were killed in a train accident in Italy. The h goes down to East Hampshire and stays with the artist and her family. There are a number of peculiar secondary characters and a number of mysteries. The h does not like these potential blood relations and plans to leave as soon as possible. This is one of the few books where I genuinely was freaked out towards the end (scary but good). Anyone who says they guessed who the villain was, as smart as they think because it really was only a handful of people who could have been guilty. I enjoyed a few of the twists too.

In true Whitney style, there's no real logic to the romance (very minor part of the story) but I still found it to be an engaging story.

In the Whitney style, this is another great romance mystery. Like romance novels of that generation, very little sex or erotica. You have to use your imagination, rather than being spoon fed the romance.
