Gene Edward Veith, Jr. lays it out plain and simple: the doctrine of vocation is biblical and it applies to every Christian’s facet of life. He introduces the definition and history of vocation and how it is referenced in the Bible. With each chapter, he concentrates on a specific area of life – family, citizenship, church, profession – and with Scripture, he explains how we as Christians are called by God to act within our vocation of each area.
My eyes were opened as to how many vocations I actually have. I am so focused on finding the right job that I forget I also have a job to be a good daughter, neighbor, citizen, and church member. This book reminded me that when my job or life in general becomes humdrum that I must still carry on, because God is present in even the most simple, mundane things. Most importantly, it reminded me that I may not have the most glamorous or high-paying job, yet God’s calling for me is important and by performing my vocation, I am helping my neighbors and carrying out God’s glorious plan.
I recommend this book to any Christian, because I know all of us can get burnt out in our jobs, family roles, etc. If anything, it will refresh you to go out in the world and do the best for God. Even non-Christians can read this, too and hopefully, be inspired to learn more about God and their role as part of God’s plan.
