I almost didn’t start this book as before the first chapter there’s a long introduction containing Elvish pronunciation, names, forms of address etc. followed by an even longer list of all the characters in the book. You can skip these and not miss much although the list of characters will be useful later if you need to remember who’s who.
Maia is the half-goblin son of the (Elvish) Emperor’s second wife who lives in obscurity in a remote province, but when the Emperor and his heirs are killed (murdered, as we discover) in an airship crash he suddenly inherits the throne. Much of the book is devoted to the intricacies of the court and how Maia manages to navigate his way around the various factions (this is where the list of characters comes in handy).
If you - like me - prefer your fantasy action-packed this may not be for you as it is quite slow-moving as Maia discovers who are his friends and who are his enemies, although I did enjoy it once I got used to the pace and stopped wondering when something would happen. The book is well-written and the characters and world-building carefully constructed - it’s an ‘old-style’ fantasy with no sex or language and little violence.
