How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

For lovers of Barker and King

I loved the scope and range of this book. Such imagination. And in Monk there’s a character to match Harry D’Amour. Marvellous stuff.

Best of all his books....

Powerful, strange, clever and twisting. What a good book. What a talented writer. Reminiscent of Stephen King, just as good, haunting.

So very good

After reading the synopsis and a few reviews, I hesitated to buy this book. However, as a Maberry horror fan, I was instantly hooked and found it to be one of my favourites. I expected it to be more of a suspense story, but it is an excellent, full-on horror story.

Slow-burn horror from a master of thrillers
Reviewed in the United States on 2 April 2018Verified Purchase
Most fans of Jonathan Maberry know him from one of two worlds: the frantic-paced ass-kicking of the Joe Ledger series, and the coming-of-age zombie stories of Rot and Ruin - with maybe the "of Night" zombie thrillers to bridge the two. Okay, or maybe V-Wars. Or the Pine Deep Trilogy.... Let's face it, the guy writes a LOT.
But Glimpse is none of those. Glimpse is a slow-burn, dreamland horror story reminiscent of (and with homages to) Joe Hill's NOS4A2 with a sprinkling of F. Paul Wilson's REPAIRMAN JACK. Doctor Nine is a terrifying villain that you really don't want haunting your dreams!
Glimpse is classic Maberry in that the characters are compelling, the setting an excellent off-kilter twist on the real world, and the themes as broad as they can get - guilt and hope, love and loss.
The end result is a great story you can burn though in a day. Highly recommended!

We Can Be Our Own Vampires: A Gripping, Psychological Tale
Reviewed in the United States on 11 April 2018Verified Purchase
Glimpse by Jonathan Maberry hooked me on page one. And I literally found myself (as the saying goes) not wanting to put the book down until I finished reading it.
The story centers around Rain, a former dancer, and three-years-clean addict, who still blames herself for the baby she gave up (at sixteen) for adoption—that and the death of her child’s father, a soldier, who died in the Iraq war.
This is a story about PTSD, a nuanced exploration (through Rain and several other characters) of how our past can still haunt us. It’s a story about Will Power and Friendship’s role in healing. Largely, it’s a story about the fierce determination of a mother’s love—the fight against making the same mistakes her own parents made.
Reflections about, and Questions on Life that Maberry brings to the reader’s attention:
How much of our mental anguish (internalized, self-inflicted pain) is the result of us not forgiving ourselves? How are we dead and alive at the same time as a result of our past mistakes? And how much power do we give those ghosts from our past? After all, we can be our own vampires, sucking life from our selves.
Maberry captures the reality and humanity about PTSD and addiction. I fell in love the protagonist Rain, the bold and empowering woman who works against all odds to find redemption. So, too, of the wide array of characters, I particularly loved Rain’s friends (multi-dimensional, true-to-life New Yorkers) who have their own PTSD horrors to work through yet find ways to help Rain on her journey.
Ultimately, Maberry takes you deep into horror for a heart-pounding psychological ride as Rain struggles to find peace, truth, and forgiveness. And it’s a visual wonderland that strikes visceral responses: you’ll see, hear, and taste everything through Maberry’s rewarding prose.
I agree with Clive Barker, who says that Glimpse is, “A waking dream, at once powerful and subtly sinister.”
