Product description

Review

"The It Girls is a glorious romp through the lives and loves of the scintillating Sutherland sisters. Karen Harper does a wonderful job of bringing Lucile and Elinor to life in this richly imagined and impeccably researched novel. Readers who enjoy historical fiction are in for a treat!" --Hazel Gaynor, New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Came Home

"[...] fans of Kathleen Tessaro and Penny Vincenzi will enjoy the layers of intrigue and the sweeping plot. Harper's ability to shift between raw ambition and tender compromise makes this family-focused novel a genuine delight."--Booklist

"In this fictionalized biography, Harper defines "it" as the charm and charisma that defined the Sutherland sisters. Not only is this a fabulous portrait of the time, but it is also a deftly crafted portrait of the complexity of sisterhood."--RT Book Reviews (starred) --This text refers to the paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glamorous Jetsetting True Story of Celebrity Sutherland Sisters in the Victorian Era
Reviewed in the United States on 25 April 2019
Having recently finished reading Karen Harper's The Queen's Governess and was thoroughly impressed, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this new release of hers.

Was not familiar with the provocative Sutherland sisters, Nellie and Lucy, whose lives are a fascinating read on feminism in the Victorian Era. Their trailblazing independence is an inspiration to the modern day woman. Loved the focus on forging their own careers despite the fact that such a thing was looked down on for women of a certain class. The book opens upon meeting their muse Lily Langtry who sets the stage for the life they would lead.

Harper definitely has a talent for writing a good romance novel. She is almost like a big sister giving advice on which men to watch out for. I think she is an author who has truly found love because her life experience shines through her writing. The conversations with the Victorian men and their poetic words and chivalry manners had me swooning. Loved the naughty skinny dipping scene.

Were there points early on in the novel that the writing was rushed and not fluid - Yes. But I blame the editor for those issues more than the writer. At the beginning of "It Girls" Harper tends to drop facts rather than weaving them into the story line. In spite of these minor flaws, the subject matter was so enthralling that I couldn’t put the book down. I became obsessed with the incredible story of these two amazing women’s lives.

Fans of Downton Abbey will love this fast paced read. Travels from London to Paris, Croatia even and ending in the Jazz Age of Hollywood, there's something for everyone here.
