Product description
Review
'A slick, sharp novel about books and relationships, drenched in delicious insider detail from the book industry. Impossible not to enjoy.' -- Matt Haig
'A juicy page turner that takes a scalpel to the literary world, written with deep insider intel and a gleeful sense of mischief, The Girl on the Page is a wickedly clever, razor-sharp satire of lust, betrayal and ambition.' -- Caroline Baum
'John Purcell triumphs with a scalpel in one hand and his heart in the other. It is a gripping, dark comedy of a novel which eviscerates the cynicism of contemporary publishing while uttering a cri du coeur for what is happening to writers and readers this century.' -- Blanche d'Alpuget --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author
While still in his twenties, John Purcell opened a second-hand bookshop - imaginatively called 'John's Bookshop' - in which he sat for ten years reading, ranting and writing. Since then he has written (under a pseudonym) a series of successful novels, interviewed hundreds of writers about their work, appeared at literary' festivals and on TV and been featured in prominent newspapers and magazines. He lives in Sydney with his wife, two children, three dogs, five cats, unnumbered gold fish and his overlarge book collection.

A page turner that made me laugh a little, cry a bit and think a lot. I was immediate drawn to all of the characters with all of their human weaknesses and rooting for them to rise above their issues. A book for readers and writers - publishing at its worst and the vexing issue of popular versus literature, well done by someone in the heart of the industry, who uses his contacts and names them! Sorry (I think!) not to get a mention. In Purcell’s terms, a downhill(easy gripping) read about an uphill (literature writing) couple, integrity and the world of books.

Don't be put off by a rather rough sexual introduction to this novel. The sex life of the central character in this novel plays a minor part in the actual fabric of the story. It is about integrity and staying true to your ideals. The question of What Constitutes Literature is the wheel that keeps the characters and the story going. Stacked full of literary references and possible different than any you've read before, it is a novel that compels you to look for the answers and question what you have always thought about "Literature".

Read the reviews and was intrigued. Started reading first few pages and had to check I had the correct book. It was Hot Sex. But written in a fast, furious, angry and passionate style. WOW! This was a challenging read. The story unfolded and the characters. doubts, emotions were developed. All very different persona. The theme changed from the story (commercial style) to a more literary style - asking questions and provoking thoughts revolving around authors, integrity and the book industry, past and present. The twist at the end was almost too subtle and in complete opposite of the beginning.
Would I reread? Most likely, At the present I am still answering some of those thought provoking questions.

It makes you appreciate what goes into writing a book, all the angst, ego and insanity. I couldn't quite warm to Amy though,a child of the modern era finally recognising there is more to writing than creating blockbusters which is a profound grasp of the bleeding obvious. However, these words ring in my ears: 'Any fool can write a book. It takes sheer genius to publish it.' In this, author Purcell - and Amy-excels. I loved this book despite itself.

So glad that I tracked this book from Luke MacPherson's Luke Warm Sex. John, I laughed and nearly cried and cringed and wished it was not over. I'm going to think about this book and talk about it with friends for a little while yet. But you are right, there are so many books that need reading. This is one of them

Truly if I had to read one more graphic description of Amy being thoroughly and visciously raped and supposedly enjoying it, I would have screamed!!! Does John really believe that's what women want?? And nothing in Amy's upbringing would indicate that. And the demise of Helen in the end was not logical given how she was described for the entire book. Sorry!!

I loved this book an interesting, poignant and sometimes sad journey with literary agents, editors and the authors, loved all the characters even though they are a flawed to varying degrees. I recommend this book to everyone regardless of your favourite author or genre. Anne

I think this was my favourite book of 2017! The dark humour the spicy content let a more gentle and captivating story unfold from many perspectives of the same event sequence. Absolute gold....dont let the little ones read it

I tried. I really tried. In fact, I've been trying for months to get into this book and it's just not happening for me. I usually get to the end of a book before I make a review but I'm just not sure when that will be.
So.. going with my usual format...
Is it a page turner? No. Not even close.
Is it worth the Kindle cost? $12.24 AUD. No. Again, not even close.
Does it make me want to read the book while I am not reading the book? No... I have put it down for weeks at a time and am only reading it because I paid for it and feel like I have to.
Did I learn anything? Not really. Maybe that my sex life is a complete bore compared to Amy's but really, I don't think I care all that much.
Will I think about this book once I am done? If I ever get to the last page, I will let you know. At this point though, I seriously doubt it.
Sorry, I really really wanted to like/love/enjoy this novel but it's got nothing special and is better left unread.

This is a fast-paced romp about the conflicting aims of commercial and literary 'success' in the world of writers and publishers. It is funny. It has a dark side. AND - at the back, it has book lists for all the major characters and the author! I really enjoyed it.
