A Girl Like Lilac is a beautiful coming of age story. Victoria James tells the tale of a sweet love between Lilac Clarke and Toby Hunter that is full of heartfelt emotion and the most heartbreaking of circumstances. But through this difficult journey to happiness, I fell hard for both characters and the driving spirit neither could contain.
Lilac's perception of the world, the way she loves her flowers and her simple life, is addicting. It's no wonder the quiet and mysterious Toby felt her magnetic pull even when he tried not to. I admired Lilac's desire to mostly keep to herself, enjoying her family, her bestie in Cheryl and the glorious world around her. In the small town of Southwold, life in not as easy for Toby as he keeps his family secrets separate from his burgeoning friendship with Lilac. But Lilac's love for Toby was always at the forefront of her mind no matter what and he became not only her one desire but her protector as well.
Gah!! You don't come across a hero quite like Toby Hunter everyday. He truly is Lilac's savior and I wanted to hug him over and over again as life just didn't deal him the cards he deserved. His family life a shambles with a overly medicated mother, a father who has had enough and younger brothers who he tries to protect, it's a wonder he can exist at all. But Lilac is the positive thread in his life and no one, not even the evil Atkins family nor his former friend Chris will stop him from getting his girl and finding his happy.
The devotion, the adoration, the respect Lilac and Toby continually give to one another is beyond incredible. I just love how their original trepidation with one another turned into an easy kind of relationship that is simply perfect. For them. The outside world can shove it where they are concerned. And even when the Author throws in heartbreak that could threaten every piece of happiness they have earned, and secrets are revealed that could truly destroy them both, Lilac and Toby remain strong. It's as if their souls are blended together for good. And with any luck, they can weather any storm that will come their way.
Victoria James devised a story-line that is as intricate as it is simple. Lilac and Toby say what they mean and mean what they say. Despite their youth, I was so impressed with how they handled everything that came way with a grace so few possess. It's truly a lovely book that I honestly couldn't put down. I was completely drawn in from the very start and waited with bated breath as life continued to throw them for a loop. But my patience and faith in a couple who deserve all the good was well rewarded.
When you need a change from the same old, same old, grab A Girl Like Lilac and enjoy the tale of a love that couldn't be denied. It's my first from the author and clearly won't be my last.
