Product description
Review
There is a vivid - almost cinematic - quality to the writing. It is intense and makes for uncomfortable yet compulsive reading ― News of the World
Will Carver's debut crime thriller centres around Detective Inspector January David's efforts to catch a serial killer. A tense and often gory read, this will have readers trying to guess who the killer is from page one ― Press Association
This writer will go from strength to strength and I believe we will be hearing a lot more from Mr. Carver. ― crimesquad.com
Brilliant debut, highly imaginative and so compelling ― milorambles.com
The book layout is completely different to anything I've read before. Will's characters are the killer, the victims and the police. What makes it so good is that every one of them is written in first person. That's no mean feat as a writer. ― highheelsandbookdeals.blogspot.com

Tour de force.

An extraordinary exciting nerve tingling nail biting book. A serial killer writes to the investigating detective, so far so cliche. But there is nothing formula or cliche in this book. True the detective has a tragedy in his past which influenced his life but everything else is new. We hear the voice of the victims, we hear the voice of the murderer, we hear the the voice of the detective. What we do not hear is....but I won't spoil this amazingly crafted story for you. Read it, enjoy it, get the next in the series to see if something left over is resolved. I can't wait. This the magic trick to end all magic tricks. Pure brilliance. Well done, Will Carver!

Very good, but narrative style sometimes confuses
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 June 2011Verified Purchase
Purchased this on the basis of the (many) good reviews and the fact that I was intrigued by the plot and the style of writing. Initially I thought the narrative structure, whereby each chapter is written from a different person's perspective (the detective's; the killer's; the victim's) to be very engrossing. It is very interesting to see the same event from several different angles (a bit like the film 'Vantage Point'). What I did find odd and very confusing however was the fact that these individual perspectives are not simply all backward looking ie someone recollecting what happened but also described what was going to happen in the future. Initially I wasn't sure if the victim's were somehow 'talking from the grave' or were themselves all psychic! The plot itself was quite gripping and there was a quite good twist at the end (although I'm not sure how the twist actually works given the narrative style - I would have to read it again to see if it makes sense). Individual perspectives are fine but I just didn't like the way the narrative played around with the timeline. Will probably still buy the 2nd novel out of interest though, to see how the main character develops.

More please.

A first outing for Detective Inspector January David, this bodes well for a brilliant new series in the world of, what I call, Crime Fiction Plus. January is investigating a serial killer, and 3 victims in, there are no clues and the killings just stop. Then comes Girl 4..someone January knows. Well he should do...its his wife. And she is still alive. Told from the point of view of January, the Killer and also his victims, this is a terrific "serial killer thriller" with just a touch of a supernatural twist. Be warned though - have "The Two" at the ready because the ending to Girl 4 is a twisty cliffhanger and you won't want to stop reading there!

I found this rather slow to start off with but it got better the more l read it. Will definitely read the next book as it was given to me as a present. As it is the second in a series l wanted to read the last story as quite often a second book refers to the first one of the series.

Loved the story and main characters, fab serial killer, dysfunctional characters, looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
