Product description

Product Description

At the age of 14 Nik Macdougall plunged off a 30 metre cliff, fracturing her pelvis and rolling partway down the mountainside. Six months later she became the youngest person in South Africa to have undergone total hip replacement surgery. The next three decades were a journey from being a person who is ultimately at the mercy of medical science and high self-expectation, to someone who is more at ease with herself and in harmony with the ups and downs of life. Told with irrepressible spirit and occasional humour, this candid memoir spans two continents, providing unique insights into the world of ‘dodgy hips’ and offering strategies to cope with the unexpected.

An extraordinary story of bad luck (understatement), courage and perseverance. Beautifully told.

A blend of medical memoir and self-help, ‘Girdle of Bones’ charts the reader through the gruelling trauma of multiple hip replacements and dislocations that became the life of the author from age 14 after falling off a cliff. Told with irrepressible spirit and occasional humour, it lets anyone with a ‘dodgy hip’ in on the privations that could be ahead of them and asks the questions they will likely forget to ask when on the spot. How good is that? On top of that practical attribute, it is an amazing and entertaining personal story of one woman's determination to remain active, extremely active, in the face of continual crushing health blows. An uplifting story from a woman who possibly holds the world record for multiple hip replacements!

I found Girdle of Bones interesting, thought provoking and often difficult to put down. Ultimately it is an inspiring story of a real person dealing with an extraordinary and difficult situation with dignity, humour and a passion for life. Definitely highly recommended for someone who may be considering or faced with joint replacement surgery. But actually also a great read for anyone really, because it's an interesting story in its own right, and thoroughly relatable. We've all experienced times when life is painful or unfair - though probably not many to this degree - and it's helpful to hear first hand the thought process of someone who chooses not to give in and not to give up. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.

'Girdle of Bones' marries the pragmatism of a medical pamphlet, the intimacy of a diary, and the fascination of a human story. From chapter to chapter, it gripped me. When the author felt frustrated, I felt frustrated. When she endured indignity, I felt the tight-lipped humiliation along with her. I recommend this book for anyone awaiting or recovering from a total hip replacement, as well as for those of us who fight to remain strong when life insists upon our vulnerability.

Deeply moving. Well written; compellingly written. This is a deeply personal, intimate story of triumph against adversity. When I finished reading, my first instinct was that I want to give the author a massive hug and then burst into tears.
