Ooh, this book is even better than the first one.
*Spoiler alert - If you haven’t read book 1 - The Gilded Cuff - please read that before reading book 2, or this review, as surprise plot twists are revealed and carried through in The Gilded Cage.*
Hayden Thorne, sister to Wes Thorne and good friend of Emery Lockwood has something to prove. She has more ambition than becoming some society brat's arm candy. She has an MBA, a feisty spirit and loud opinions she's not afraid to share. She wants to show that she is capable of being the hero.
When she finds out that Emery’s twin, Fenn is actually alive and riding bulls in Colorado, she jumps on the private jet to rescue him from danger. She couldn't have anticipated how much danger she would actually face, including the risk posed to her heart by this sexy, lost cowboy.
The author has written this from multiple points of view, so we get to see into the mind of the assassin. At first, I thought this slowed things down, but it added more anticipation to the story.
The author makes us wait for more than half the book for the reunion between Fenn and his family, but it gives Fenn time to let the news sink in and build the connection between himself and the Thorne siblings. He has his adopted family to think of and doesn't want to leave them in the lurch. His thoughtfulness endears him even more to Hayden who has been missing that family connection all her life. Apart from her relationship with her brother, Wes she hasn't had anyone who cared for her without wanting to change her. For someone so strong she is actually quite unsure of herself. She has never felt true acceptance. In Colorado, Hayden gets to experience a different take on life and she likes it.

5.0 out of 5 stars `You're Fenn Lockwood. Famous missing twin of the Lockwood family from Long Island.' 11 June 2015
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Oklahoma author Lauren Smith comes to her second career (she is an attorney) with a rich background of experience: a native Oklahoman, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science from Oklahoma State University, studies at Cambridge, in Ireland and in China, and two law degrees from both the University of Detroit-Mercy in Michigan and the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada. By day she is an intellectual property attorney in Tulsa and by night she pens highly awarded novels of about every variation of Romance conceivable. As she has stated `Mankind has mastered many secrets of the universe, but the secrets of love are too vast and deep to be solved so easily. I write about romance to explore the mysterious and beautiful power of love. What better way to do this than to explore stories on the page?'

With a fine sense of creating suspense and backstory, repeating her technique she used in Book 1, Lauren opens her book with a newspaper clipping: ` It has been four months since 8-year-old twin boys Fenn Lockwood and Emery Lockwood were kidnapped from their home in Weston Island during a garden party parents Miranda and Elliott Lockwood were hosting at the Lockwood family home. One month ago, Emery Lockwood saw found and returned home. Police and the FBI have been unable to determine the fate of Fenn Lockwood. No body or a crime scene have been discovered and Emery Lockwood is not responsive to questioning due to suffering from symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It seems the fate of the beloved little boy Fenn Lockwood may never be known. --New York Times, October 1990 Yet when Chapter One begins we find Fenn (now using the name Smith as a surname) as a broncobuster in a rodeo. And we learn that Emery Lockwood is bonded to the BDSM club called the Gilded Cuff! `The Gilded Cuff was the only place where someone could get access to Emery. The man had lived like a veritable recluse since the abduction. He needed his world to be shaken up. He'd spent twenty-five years hiding, hurting and suffering alone. Hayden knew it was time for him to move on with his life. She had known from the start the sort of person Sophie was: kind, compassionate, a warrior for justice and the right woman to break down Emery's walls. Hayden viewed her role as the instigator of their relationship and saw it as a winning success, since the two were as tight as a pair of lovebirds now.' And it is just this sort of turn of events in which Lauren excels - the surprise that the twins survived, changed, and have encountered strong women - all tied to the BDSM life. And she understands and writes eroticism well indeed!

Lauren's synopsis of the plot is seductive: `: Passion that takes no prisoners, and love that tests the limits of ecstasy. Fenn Lockwood comes alive in the shadows. Though he might have physically survived the kidnapping that stole his childhood, the trauma and pain he lived through have marked him forever. Now the only place where Fenn can be himself is within the walls of his private BDSM world-a place of erotic obsession, where desire isn't just captured . . . it's bound.
Hayden Thorne knows that behind Fenn's hardened exterior is a man worth fighting for. Yet to save him from the past that still haunts him, Hayden will have to abandon every inhibition she's ever had and venture into Fenn's intoxicatingly sensual world. Each tantalizing second she spends in Fenn's searing embrace is more delicious than the last and soon Hayden begins to think that she may never want to leave such torturous bliss'.

Lauren Smith knows her territory and writes very well. This is a romance author at her best - one with polished skill as well as the legal background to boost her books into the wholly credible range. The continuing aroma of success mounts! Grady Harp, June 15

5.0 out of 5 stars A great sexy and emotion filled romance amid mystery and suspense… 23 June 2015

This is the second book in the Surrender series that can be read as a stand-alone. The author provided enough information about the previous background storyline but I think that the reading was enhanced by my having read The Gilded Cuff where we learn of everything Emery went through. Emery and Fenn are twins, mirror images of each other, torn apart when they were eight years of age.

The professional opposite of his twin who he doesn’t remember, Fenn Lockwood is a bull-riding cowboy living and working in Colorado under the surname of Smith. Throughout his life he’s had odd sensations that he hasn’t understood, sometimes mental images and strange thoughts. When he has an episode on a bull-ride that causes him to be thrown his life is saved by a sexy gorgeous red-head whose reason for being in Colorado is to tell him of his history and bring him home.

Just because she’s a woman doesn’t mean that Hayden Thorne wants to just be a rich man’s wife. In an attempt to gain approval from her parents she heads to Colorado to warn the missing twin that his life’s in danger and bring him home. She’s gutsy, sassy, and smart, capable of more than she’s been allowed to do because of her family name. She didn’t expect the lightning bolt that ran through her when her eyes connected with Fenn’s across the ring having never responded that way to his twin. When he’s tossed by the bull without thinking she jumps into the ring to distract the dangerous animal so that others can help him.

These twins are so intriguing. Having suffered from the kidnapping that parted them though they grew up apart in ways they are similar. Emery believing his brother dead kept what really happened to himself while Fenn injured the night they were separated blocked the memories of his previous life and hid the occasional odd feelings. Both are men with strong dominant personalities protective of those that they care for. What Fenn dealt with upon learning of his past was realistic from the feelings of skepticism and denial to acceptance of what he knew deep inside was the truth. He had to come to terms with how the life that he’s known was a lie. It’s with Hayden’s support that Fenn realizes that though the facts of his life that he’d believed were untrue the man that he is doesn’t change with that knowledge.

Hayden was the perfect woman for Fenn, strong yet submissive to the right man, a man who could appreciate what she’s capable of and would never restrain her outside of the bedroom. The attraction between Fenn and Hayden was intense, the sex scenes steamy but their connection was much deeper than lust; they found what they had been missing in their lives in each other.

I loved this story as much as the first one, it was a great sexy and emotion filled romance amid mystery and suspense with more plot twists continued to a satisfying conclusion. The suspense heightened the romance. I think back to the stormy night the two protagonists spent on the rock ledge and how in their almost shared tragedy their souls were comforted and the level of trust in those moments was palpable and what made them survive. I read this book in one sitting as I could not put it down.
5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! A must read! 15 March 2017

Oh my, what a series! There's a little BDSM, but it's so relevant to the whole heart of the story. The characters are amazing, and I thought Emery & Sophie were some of my favorites from book 1, wow, I loved Fenn and Hayden! This book has it all, with lots of steamy romance, and plenty of suspense and action. Plan to immediately start book 3! I've hesitated to read the Surrender series because I most always stick with the regency genre, but as awesome as Lauren Smith's regency novels are, this was just as good if not better. Highly recommend!!! You won't regret!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Twins reunite to stop a killer threatening them. 16 June 2015
By mountain girl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
The continuation of story begun in The Gilded Cuff, thirty-three year old twins reunited after being kidnaped and separated when they were eight. Emery was found and raised by his wealthy parents on Long Island but Fenn was assumed dead. Sophie, Emery’s girlfriend helps to discover Fenn who suffered memory loss from the kidnapping and has been living as a ranch hand in Colorado.

The kidnapper has never been discovered and the danger for the twins still exists. When proof that Fenn is in Colorado appears, Emery’s best friend, Wes and his sister, Hayden arrive in Colorado to persuade Fenn to return to Long Island.

Starks fly the instant Fenn sees Hayden. Amidst rodeo falls, car crashes, fights and fires, a steamy romance develops.

After 25 years, the twins reunite to protect their women and themselves from the killer threatening the family.

This book has plenty of action and romance. The family dynamics that hold the family together and also pull it apart add to the drama. Sophie and Hayden are strong women that protect their strong men in a refreshingly honest and loyal way.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eye-Opening and Pulse-Pounding Prose 15 June 2015

This is far from my usual fare, and this sort of writing is a somewhat new area for my tastes. I can certainly see the skill in the writing, and I must admit that Smith does a wonderful job of capturing real human emotion within what many (I myself included, until recently), might consider low-grade writing, or even "smut". This is far from it, proving that erotic literature is not only worth praising, but worth writing, and for someone who will always try something once, I hope that more writers give it a shot someday. I'm sure it can be a wonderful release. As for Smith's latest release (I read the first one too), this one takes a more psychological approach to the whole culture, looking more in on Fenn's underlying motivations and struggles that have made him into the man he is. He is capable of love, in his own way, and his relationship with Hayden is unique and memorable. There were a few moments where even my Puritan side appeared, but generally, this was a classy and wildly insightful journey into a lifestyle that has strangely come to the forefront of popular culture, but hasn't yet been fully understood by many people - particularly readers. Round of Applause for opening people's eyes in such a well-written way.
