The Ghost at Willow Creek takes place in the isolated countryside of Australia near the end of the 19th century. Eleanor experiences the ghost of her deceased child, and her husband doesn’t, thus their conflict.
The story isn’t perfect (after all, I think it’s Johansson’s very first published story). It’s a little verbose in places, and I wonder if the story benefits from the present tense narration. But I truly enjoyed the tale. I especially liked the multiple sensory descriptions, the feeling of isolation that Johansson conveyed so well, and the question throughout the story: is Eleanor insane or not?
Four big stars.
