As a Samurai in ancient Japan, you are given challenges and ethical conundrums throughout the game; letting you forge your own path through a war torn and bloody world being consumed by the Mongol empire.
Plot: 10/10 - really well thought through. Almost an obsessive feel to the characters, making them realistic and consistent in their own nature throughout the twists and turns of the game. Wonderful wins and losses that keep you moving along with the adventure.
Graphics: 10/10 - just stunning! So many beautiful scenes.
Game controls: 7/10 - sometimes annoying and just fiddly.
Game play: 9/10 - a great selection of approaches and tactics letting you forge your own approach to any situation.
Overall: 9/10 - despite some wonderful elements to this game, there were some blatant lapses in judgement for the fundamentals of game play. In some places just too many options, weapons, control combinations. Plus some annoying elements, such as starting a major battle on low health, rather than full each time. It often seemed that death was a better option over losing a little health. Far too many cut scenes even after the most minor quest - this is what a “skip” button was made for!
Having said the negatives, the positives more than tip the balance.
Even if you have no interest in ancient Japanese culture, the hours of addictive game play will have you hooked!
