THE GHOST NEXT DOOR
When destiny takes a hand...
You've got to hold on tight.

When single mom Elizabeth Jennings gets sent to a new town to revamp its weekly paper, she resists. Her daughter Claire is just fifteen, and has recently started high school. But Elizabeth's boss insists, so the two pack up and move to the tiny Virginia town, which isn't even on most maps. Their luck goes from bad to worse when they discover the house Elizabeth rented online cozies up to an abandoned house. When creepy things start occurring next door, Elizabeth's glad to have the small-town sheriff in their corner. Nathan Thorpe is not just a stand-up guy they can trust, he's cool to have around when things go bump in the night. Elizabeth also learns he's good at holding her tight. And, when she's wrapped in his arms, she becomes afraid of more than ghostly happenings. She fears she's losing her heart.

Like most folks in Blayton, Nathan Thorpe is here for a reason. Only, he didn't fully understand what that reason was until a stunning brunette and her daughter came to town. Nathan's immediately drawn to Elizabeth and feels motivated to protect her and Claire, believing that means shielding them from nonsensical small-town lore. With Halloween approaching, there are rumors swirling about concerning the old Fenton place located across the street from the graveyard, and next to the newer home occupied by the Jennings. Nathan's a calm thinker who can find a rational explanation for almost anything. Yet there are deeper mysteries in Blayton than Nathan can explain. When he learns the truth, will he still be able to hold onto the woman he loves?

A sweet, traditional PG-rated romance.
Short contemporary length, approximately 50,000 words.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Romantic Book! 6 February 2014

I enjoyed this book, but it is very G rated. Not that this is a bad thing. I mean that this book fits anyone who likes an exciting and romantic storyline. The characters were believable and this book was well written. I am not sure if this book was written for tweens (since most of the characters are high school students), but it was a good mixture of love, ghosts, and the future of good things for new additions to a family. I had a good time reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars She's Done It Again 27 August 2013

I think this is Ginny Baird's first novella with a paranormal edge but believe me, she's nailed the combination of heart-warming and creepy. The small town setting is idyllic and I found myself caring about each of the characters... which is saying something since there's a few of them. It was rewarding to see them all overcoming their struggles and then WHAM! - Halloween arrived and left me reeling!

This is a sweet romance and great read for the Fall. It's unsettling enough to be perfect for Halloween night but it won't cause any nightmares ;)

3.0 out of 5 stars Just so so! 25 April 2016

For fans of sweet romantic suspense, The Ghost Next Door would be the perfect read. Elizabeth and her daughter Claire are dismayed to discover their rental home is located adjacent to an old abandoned house, and right across the street from the town cemetery. You can imagine their location doesn't bode well for them or for sheriff Nathan who comes to their rescue on a regular basis. The secondary storyline centers around Claire and the girls who constantly bully her at school. Unfortunately, each storyline is somewhat predictable, with a PG romance and an instant attraction between Elizabeth and Nathan that I found unrealistic and annoying. Imagine my delighted surprise when that predictable storyline suddenly took a left turn that I never saw coming! With less repetition and a little more emotion between the two adults this would have been a much better read for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars a very unexpected twist! 16 August 2013

I must say, as I read, I was curious how the author was going to go with the story. I thought I had it figured out when Melody Anne went into the old house, but I was so wrong! This was a very sweet story that had just enough love story. The twist at the end took me by surprise! Great job to the author! Can't wait to read more from he!

Single mom Elizabeth and her teenage daughter Claire have been on their own for over a decade. They've struggled to make it, but at the end of the day, they have one another, and that's all that really counts. So when Elizabeth's editor sends her to the remote little town of Blayton, Virginia to try to resurrect their defunct newspaper, the duo is ready to tackle the unknown.

But to Elizabeth's amazement, this time the unknown involves Nathan, the local sheriff. He's handsome and kind, and the two seem drawn to one another almost from the moment they meet. Elizabeth is a little hesitant; there's been no real man in her life since Claire's dad left them, and she's afraid to lose her heart. Before long, however, it seems Elizabeth and Nathan are meant to be, as though they always HAVE been.

Just as wonderful, Claire's falling in love herself. Her new classmate Perry is everything a girl could ever want in a first boyfriend, and she's thrilled.

The one damper on their newfound happiness is the house next door. It's an old Victorian, up for sale, presumably after an old woman died there under some questionable circumstances. The porch rocking chairs tend to creak unexpectedly, strange noises can be heard at night, and urban legends abound.

Before long, however, Elizabeth and Claire begin to understand the house next door is hardly the spookiest thing about their new lives...

Baird does a good job, creating a world in which her characters move along normally and at times almost too languidly. Then she springs her readers with a shock, turning upside down everything they thought they knew about the characters and the town of Blayton itself.
