Her brother Rand has a secondary romance which is very sweet and make a good counterpoint to the main event. The romance(s) play out on a five city tour of Australia through Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and finishing up in Sydney (sorry Hobart, you miss out again.)
There is a lot in this story because Rielle has some deep issues that come to the fore as they get closer to Sydney which is the home town of the duo and also for Jake.
This is a great little romance which fits in with the current trend for rock star romances but has it's own quirky Australian touch. This is an early effort for the author and as such is a little uneven at times but the story itself kept me going. I was even getting quite resentful that the doctors and other appointments were too prompt so I kept having to put it down. Lucky my DH had surgery which left me sitting in the hospital for hours and I finished it.

Before you read this novel, I recommend you read the FREE 3000 word prequel “Ice Queen Origins.” Well, it’s more a prologue and it gives great background and context for heroine Rielle, and her brother Rand who go on to become the rock-stars in the band “Ice Queen” in GETTING REAL.
Type the following in your search engine to find the story onlne: “Escape Publishing Ice Queen Origins.”
Rielle is one bad girl. Complex, damaged and wild. She tests all limits: music artistry, stage presence, professional and personal relationships. She is tough, demanding, uncompromising. And yet she is capable of loving deeply - and she is toughest on herself.
Along comes normal, boy next door Jake. He’s a respected, sensible roadie/tour manager. From the moment they meet, Rielle rocks his world. Another character contemptuously describes him as “just a roadie.” But he emerges as so much more.
The romance hurts and the love (and sex) is put through the toughest tests. Towards the end, I was on the edge of my seat.
By contrast, Rielle’s brother Rand experiences his own beautifully written romance within this book. His romance seems natural and sunny. Its sweetness is a relief for a reader feeling shaken and stirred by Rielle and Jake.
In the mix you get ample cheeky Australian roadie humour for many laugh out loud moments. It was great to inhabit the exhausting and exhilarating rock world for a while as a reader. What a rush. I just wish there was an epilogue for this novel.
This was an amazing reading experience. I recommend it.
Discussing the heroine is difficult without giving away spoilers. For me, I felt her vulnerability from the start. That let me go on the journey through the tough times with her.
Jake, the hero, on the other hand just jumps in and grabs the reader's approval from the beginning. How can you not like such a great guy?
As in "Grease Monkey Jive", the side characters are also living breathing people. There's a secondary romance that is sweet and believable, and kind of highlights how far Rielle and Jake's relationship still has to travel ... but don't worry, there is a happy ending!
Also if you're an Aussie, or you know Australia, you'll enjoy the different tour stops :)
It's refreshing to see the usual dynamic for a rock romance tipped on its head. It's usually the male who is the star and the female is the one running after him or holding him off.
