Product Description

From the bestselling author of Grease Monkey Jive comes a rollercoaster rock-and-roll ride of confronting fears, making music, and learning to be true.

Rielle Mainline is a rock star with a hardcore image, a troubled heart, and a twenty-five-city tour to front with her band, Ice Queen. She should be ecstatic. But the tour includes Sydney and Rielle has spent years running away from that city.

Jake Reed knows Rielle's reputation as a prize bitch will make being Ice Queen's tour manager a challenge, but Jake's confident he can handle her -- until he meets her. Then he's off-balance, not sure if he wants to kiss her or throttle her. Sparks fly, tempers flare, and boundaries are crossed.  It's rock star verses roadie, alpha girl verses boy-next-door and neither of them will survive unchanged.

I've been reading this book for months because it was on my phone and I started reading it in doctors waiting rooms. It's romance set around the tour of Ice Queen, a rock bank with a brother and sister as leads. Arielle, Rielle (note the play on the name) is a real diva and when she confronts Jake, the sweetheart roadie manager, sparks truly fly.

Her brother Rand has a secondary romance which is very sweet and make a good counterpoint to the main event. The romance(s) play out on a five city tour of Australia through Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne and finishing up in Sydney (sorry Hobart, you miss out again.)

There is a lot in this story because Rielle has some deep issues that come to the fore as they get closer to Sydney which is the home town of the duo and also for Jake.

This is a great little romance which fits in with the current trend for rock star romances but has it's own quirky Australian touch. This is an early effort for the author and as such is a little uneven at times but the story itself kept me going. I was even getting quite resentful that the doctors and other appointments were too prompt so I kept having to put it down. Lucky my DH had surgery which left me sitting in the hospital for hours and I finished it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! I love this book 7 December 2013

I waited all week to order another of Paton's books. I read Grease Monkey Jive (twice! and I never read anything twice) last weekend and couldn't wait to order another one. This book was every bit as good as that one and the other 2 of Ms. Paton's that I've read. Wonderful characters that make the reader's heart ache and a plot that is completely character driven and never contrived. I'll read it again tomorrow and then probably download Detained.......or maybe I'll download Detained now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Genre Bender 2 April 2013
By Rex - Published on Amazon.com

This story tips the tradition of rock romances on its head. It's the heroine who is the mega star and the hero is surprisingly a boy next door type. She's all rock chick hard and in control and he's all happy families soft and he's scared of heights. She thinks he's pathetic, until she realises he's not about the show but has inner strength - the very opposite of her. She's so screwed up, she's all about the show and scared to be herself.

It's refreshing to see the usual dynamic for a rock romance tipped on its head. It's usually the male who is the star and the female is the one running after him or holding him off.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aussie rock star 5 April 2013
By Jenny Schwartz - Published on Amazon.com

I'm so far from being a rock chick it's not funny, but I loved how real the world of concert touring felt in "Getting Real".

Discussing the heroine is difficult without giving away spoilers. For me, I felt her vulnerability from the start. That let me go on the journey through the tough times with her.

Jake, the hero, on the other hand just jumps in and grabs the reader's approval from the beginning. How can you not like such a great guy?

As in "Grease Monkey Jive", the side characters are also living breathing people. There's a secondary romance that is sweet and believable, and kind of highlights how far Rielle and Jake's relationship still has to travel ... but don't worry, there is a happy ending!

Also if you're an Aussie, or you know Australia, you'll enjoy the different tour stops :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sex Fail 7 April 2013
By Ying Lu - Published on Amazon.com

Oh my God there is a sex fail scene. It's all heat and build up between Jake and Rielle and then they lose it once they hit the bedroom because of lack of trust. It's heartbreakingly real. I couldn't put it down I had to know if they'd try again and get it right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love comes in all disguises 8 April 2013
By F. A. Housden - Published on Amazon.com

Getting real is fast paced, edgy and intense. It is a vision of today by a writer who has obviously researched her subject. Arielle - a rock princess who is only too real, too vulnerable. Jake, the kind of guy everyone should have in their lives. A great love story, it made me cry...
