I fail to understand how one person can have invented this entire world, it's complex characters and unique events. Brandon Sanderson has done a brilliant job of taking on the master's work to its next stage, and maintaining it faithfully. Let us hope that when Robert Jordan rejoins the Wheel of Life and its patterns he brings to life another literary coup such as this series and this novel in particular. This is my second reading of the series and I only discover more to admire with each renewal of my acquaintance.

This fantasy epic has proved to be a engrossing story, enough to read 12 books already! The hook for me is the mystical synchronicity of this strangely familiar yet vastly foreign parallel dimension. How it's possible to walk in the dragon's shoes is a feat of the creator's genius and abilities to access not only mythic realms but the collective unconscious itself. Dreading the finale, and where to go from there

I was a little worried with a new author taking over one of my favorite stories - and one in which I have quite a bit of time invested - but after the first few pages I discovered that my fears were unfounded. Brian Sanderson has obviously come to know the characters and the world well, and portrays them in The Gathering Storm as true to form. I really couldn't detect any deviation from the characters as Robert Jordan originally depicted them. A few reviewers have said they found the character of Mat a little off but I have to say I didn't notice and found myself enjoying his journey through the world and the way he reacted to events as something to be expected from such a colorful character, with such a unique sense of humor. The same can be said for all the other characters as well - at least in my opinion.
Sanderson says he didn't go in with the intention of copying Jordan's style but he appears to have done it anyway as the world is as rich, detailed, and vibrant as the original author intended it to be.Perhaps where Brian differs is in the pacing. Jordan always took his sweet time describing every little intricate detail of a room, the people in it, every little twitch of an eyebrow or tug of a braid, and then onto their various states of attire. At times this level of detail was appreciated, while at others it just seemed to be a bottleneck to the pace of the story. Sanderson seems to be able to get right into it, but amazingly, without sacrificing any of the imagery I have grown used to.
I don't know how does it and nor do I care. I am just glad the story has finally been finished in a way befitting of the original author and am thoroughly looking forward to the final three books.

This once more shows the talent of the late Robert Jordan. All his characters are diverse and ranged. From serious Perrin to larrikan Matrim. Throughly enjoyed

No spoilers. This book was such a pleasure to read. The new authors style is wonderful. Obviously he was extremely well prepared, I hardly noticed the difference in style. The scale of the series is reaching its crescendo. At more than one stage I found myself 'air-punching' and woo-hooing a bit. I'm a total nerd for these books. A great read. Cheers

Elegant passing of the baton.

Long term fans will either love, hate or be irritated by the passing of the torch to Brandon Sanderson. I was wary when I first picked this up but the dedication had me won over and crying like a baby.
Brandon Sanderson has a different style and he has not tried to emulate Robert Jordan; no complaints from me there. I love both writers. In many ways, this book is like an avalanche plot lines converge quickly and it is a lot to take in. I agree with some of the criticism that Sanderson didn't quite do some characters justice but I'm not going to deduct a star for that. For me, he brought a new and different energy to a series I have grown to love. If you are someone who was put off by the so called 'slog' of previous books, there is a lot happening here.

A great read yet again. I love how the adventures are playing out. This book is a little different as there is a definite change in place. There is so much happening you almost feel exhausted.
This book has been a favourite for me. No time is wasted. There seemed to be much more happening in this book without losing any of the passion or detail. You can feel the tension building as the last battle approaches.
The depth of creativity in this series is remarkable and a work of genius. I love how the characters develop and remain unpredictable. So glad I can binge read rather than waiting for the next book to be published.
I would not have noticed any change in author had the fact not been published. A great achievement in itself.
Gripping from start to finish and I didn't want it to end.

Is it different to Jordan on his own? Yes. Is it still brilliant? Yes.

I have loved diving into and reading the Wheel of Time over the past year, and I was curious to see what would be different about this, the first of the series written after Robert Jordan's death by Brandon Sanderson, apparently using Jordan's notes. In short, I loved this book, which felt a rip-roaring ride and kept me up late reading when I should have been asleep.
Is it different to the previous books? Yes, it is. Especially having read the previous 11 books in the last 12 months, and particularly at the start of this novel, I noticed a different rhythm: shorter chapters, chapters switching between characters with a different rhythm to in the previous books. And I noticed some linguistic differences: a turn of phrase here, perhaps slightly more modern language than Jordan liked there, even the odd time when a character used a different version - I think - of Mat's name than they had in previous books.
Is it faithful? Yes, to me it is. Sanderson brilliantly brings the feel of the characters who - by now - we know so well, into this story. There are still laughs, frustrations, confusions and inspirations in all the places there were in previous books.
And, above all, is it a good book, worth reading? Absolutely. I suspect that, coming into the final straight of the epic series, Jordan would have picked up the pace at this point. That is what usually happens in long series when a story arc has to span more than a few books. But with Sanderson, I think we get that even more so. Either way, this is a book full of memorable scenes as the plot of the Wheel of Time begins to draw together. Some are brutal, some are worrying and some I found surprisingly emotional - including the incredible affection I have developed for poor Lews Therin. This, particularly, is a story of Rand Al'Thor, and if you have made it this far in the series, then it's absolutely time to read book 12.

Surprisingly the best volume in the series in my opinion

I swallowed this book in 3 days, doing little else but reading.
At first I was somewhat wary often catching myself in critically waiting and watching for style breaking segments, whereupon I could go; Ahaha!!!! youre not worthy mister Sanderson!.
But to my surprise and gladness I found nothing to be critical about. I truely enjoyed reading The gathering storm, and although I dread the outcry from RJs devoted fans, I found Sandersons writing style more palatable and enjoyable to read.
I feel he has kept the spirit of all of the characters and remained true to their personalities, strengths and weaknesses. I also thought he made some of them even more relatable and because of that more engaging and interesting to read about.
I also want to thank Sanderson for finally giving Rand the freedom to do some serious butt-kicking when it comes to the selfrighteous annoying female characters he has been surrounded by for ages.
I certainly feel a lot happens in The Gathering Storm, a lot more of the plot unravels and a lot of loose ends are tied up in this book. And while it ends with some lose threads left in the balance, it ends on a highnote and with more optimism than I can recall from any of the other books.
It is well worth your money to buy this installment, and I cant wait for the next one. This was truely a positive surprise and Im glad Sanderson was picked to do this job, because right now I cant really think of anyone who could have been so unselfish in his writing and so dedicated to honoring another mans work. I think he shines through, but in the only way he can without ruining Jordans great saga. That in itself is a great feat indeed, and I am very glad he manages so well.

Sometimes things get dragged out unnecessarily, this is not one of those times! Robert Jordan's final book made into 3 books is exactly what was needed to give the series the satisfying ending it well deserved!
Brandon brings Jordan's saga and this trilogy to a heartbreaking, climactic and epic end! Well worth sticking with the series to read these final 3 books!
Easily back to the series rip roaring best, was even better the second time I read these last 3!
