Product Description

Follow the adventures of Gaspar, a freelance thief who stubbornly refuses to swear fealty to the Thieves' Guild.

Cursed with a special affinity for calamity and mishap, and a talent for snatching defeat from the brink of victory, our hero blunders from one misfortune to the next, yet somehow always manages to survive to tell the tale.

Accompanied by his long-suffering companions - Hubris, a spellbroker who refuses to pay his dues to Wizards' Hall; Marna, a feisty thiefess with a quick tongue and a quicker temper; and Drune, a mischievous wight with an unusual magical ability - our unlikely hero encounters looming retribution and imminent catastrophe at every step.

Whether raiding a sinister funeral ship, foiling a scheming seductress, solving a puzzling murder, or confronting a gang of villainous ship-wreckers, Gaspar always somehow manages to narrowly side step disaster. But there's seemingly no end to the troubles he can find, and he soon finds himself an unwitting player in the siege of an ancient border fortress by a goblin army.

Told with an appealing mixture of seriousness and humour, this is an exciting, fast-paced romp based in a fantasy world where anything can, and usually does, happen!

(Please note that only the paperback edition of Gaspar The Thief includes the prequel novella, Gaspar And The Fantastical Hats. These are sold separately as e-books.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! 10 October 2013

I had a really great time with this charming (and charmed) light pleasure. I really enjoyed it! A lot of the fun is that much of the "protagonist" stuff is neither black nor white which is very "real world" despite residing in a fantasy realm. Gaspar is smart and apt, but hapless--yet is lucky, yet missteps, yet fumbles, yet lands on his feet. Hubris is bumbling, but often will rise to the occasion very realistically, even with the help from his magic--a lot of the "realistically" being that his powers, such as they are, are scant and when they are used, are "barely." Marna is just wonderful Marna--and she rocks and missteps too. A fun charmer.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a Gaspar Fan! 19 September 2015

Amazing descriptions and details in a thoroughly fun adventure with a thief, a magician and Gaspar's thieving sorta girlfriend. The vocabulary is wonderfully realistic and gives a true sense of a swords and sorcery adventure complete with guilds and all their classes. It's fun to read about our bumbling hero as he stumbles (typically from too much ale) from one adventure into another, not always far ahead of the Thieves Guild. His larcenous heart and wandering eye get him into an unending stream of trouble, and he deserves every bit of it. And when they add a fourth member to their group, things get really crazy. Thanks for a fun read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic fantasy not to be missed 6 November 2012

Gaspar the Thief has everything you want in a good fantasy - an intricate plot, wizards and magic, and a series of adventures taking place against the backdrop of a beautifully-drawn ancient world. David A Lindsay writes in an eloquent style making it a pleasure to read and lending the story an epic Tolkien-esque quality. I couldn't put my Kindle down until I had finished Gaspar the Thief. Highly recommended to all fantasy fans.
4.0 out of 5 stars ok I guess 11 February 2014

The beginning is rather flimsy with several of the first short stories revolving around the same characters and not really providinc anything worth remembering, but the two last and longer ones are certainly better. The first stories could have certainly benefited from a stronger and more varied cast and better character development. For instance, Hubris is poised as one of the main supporting characters, but besides being a handy plot-device, doesn't really provide more than a few cheap chuckles.

David Lindsay continues to entertain as so few authors can do. His characters take readers through a gambit of emotions as they following them through one exploit after the other. A truly enjoyable way to spend a cozy afternoon. Kudos to Mr. Lindsay. May he grace the world of literature for years to come.
