3.5 stars would be fairer. Some of Smith's familiar characters ...men who are avers to work but like money ...huge amounts of alcohol...exotic locations. The synopsis tells enough . I found it a bit disjointed . At times I felt there was a really good story building up and then the location was moved at the wrong point and I began to lose interest.
The ending was dramatic and would have made a good film . On paper it just seemed a bit ordinary. A nice idea ,but for me this particular idea was done so much better by FW Crofts in Golden Ashes in 1940.

Tom Ransome was jobless, on the brink homelessness and at his wit’s end when he bumped into Jeremy Eskdale…
The two men had not met since their days at Rugby, until that chance encounter in the Flying Fox which was so strangely to alter their lives.
For from that moment their lives were to become curiously entwined.
Tom, at the very end of his fortunes, found himself looking after the huge ramshackle country house which Jeremy's rich wife was trying to sell.
To Tom it was a stroke of great good luck, but while his two young daughters considered the new country life a haven, Tom's wife thought otherwise.
A world away from the sociable and wealthy life she used to lead, Kate Ransome began to deteriorate with the strain of being the sole source of income for the family.
Especially when — again quite by chance — Jeremy and his wife come to stay and Tom, good-natured obliging Tom, finds himself acting as their unpaid servant.
Jeremy, bored and idle, and the happy-go-lucky extrovert Tom amuse themselves with hatching absurd improbable plots.
A game that was to lead to the most terrible consequences…
But has it all been a matter of chance?
Does anything ever happen by chance?
And who was making use of whom?
A Game of Consequences is a gripping tale of a friendship and manipulation that will keep you hooked until the very end.

'Miss Shelley Smith is among the most distinguished of those writers who have abandoned the detective story for the crime novel. . . The story maintains its tension to the end . . . What she has set out to do is done superlatively well.' - Times Literary Supplement

Tom Ransome is beside himself when his partner is murdered, the police discover two sets of books. Now, Tom is penniless, unemployed and his family homeless. A chance meeting with his old pal Jeremy quickly results in a place for the family to live. One thing leads to another and the downward spiral continues. The pace is okay and that ending seems to be poetic justice.

A Game of Consequences

Review This story could've been wonderful if it had a more interesting beginning and a more complete roundaboutness to the conclusion. Everything took too long and too much unimportance to come into fruition. Then in the middle when things start to become more intriguing, the intensity wanes away then there's nothing to finish it off in awe. I really don't like to read stories in British dialect, and there dialect was old style, so it was hard to grasp alot of the conversation between characters. But I downloaded this book months ago,and I intended to endure to the last page!

A tale of two freeloaders and their greed.

An interesting essay of The Law of Unintended Consequences. Tom and Jerry strike up a relationship after a few years apart. Neither one works so there is a lot of idle chit chat between them. Some drinks, a flip remark, a bit of humor, a few "what if's" and before they know it they have a caper. Their caper becomes a real dilemma for the pair as circumstances spiral out of their control.
The story is set in mid-20th century England, with excursions to the Continent. Other than a few extended paragraphs with tedious prose, the book was an enjoyable read.
I have another Shelley Smith novel on deck and can't wait to read it.
