Grahame Farrell is a best-selling true-crime author specialising in historical cases. His special interest is the Victorian era, and he also writes about 18th Century and 20th Century murders, and the social contexts in which they occur. He has been consulted by the BBC on Victorian murder cases.

He sees a true-murder case as a miniature drama. The murderer, once he has committed the act, is essentially alone, his focus now entirely on not getting caught, and all the while balancing that priority with the need to act normally, to go about his business, to relate to his immediate social world. It is little wonder that Shakespeare and Dickens feature murder so prominently in their work. The rules of morality have been broken; only God and the killer know the secret.

Grahame's standpoint is that true crime should be well-written and gripping, and should also inform the reader as much as possible as to what life was like in the period when the case is set. Too many true-crime books are simply sensationalist and exploitative.

A number of reviewers have commented that they enjoy reading accounts of little-known cases which they are discovering for the first time. Grahame endorses that view, and makes it a policy to include several of these in his collections.

'A Mix of Murders', 'Gaslight Villainy', 'Blood on the Cobbles', 'A Gallows Guest List', and 'Dancing the Hangman's Reel' are all available on Amazon Kindle and the last-mentioned is also available in paperback. 'Criminal Tales', his latest collection of 18th- and 19th-Century cases, is now on Amazon Kindle and in paperback.

If you wish to get in touch with Grahame on any issue to do with true crime, or on matters relating to his books, please do so by emailing him on the contact form on his website.
