Stella won’t give up, but she doesn’t know how to go on.

Stella North, a rising star in the police, has her life torn apart by a gunman’s bullets. She has often faced danger, but these injuries mean she must give up the job she loves. Her grandmother Beth is her rock. And Beth is no ordinary woman. At seventy, she runs marathons and has a past that Stella knows very little about.

Beth calls in her friend Michael to help with Stella’s recovery. But this man means a lot more to Beth than she reveals. And Stella’s ex-husband Edward and old police partner Robbie want to help, but Stella puts up emotional barriers, and they have problems of their own. Her old friends from her days of Urbex (exploring old abandoned buildings) offer a glimmer of hope for the future.

How will Stella find the strength to overcome the challenges of her new life, and will her grandmother at last resolve the secrets of her past?

By UK #1 best-selling author, Joy Ellis, this is a gripping and emotional departure from her acclaimed crime fiction, full of engaging characters who will take you on a journey of recovery.

GUIDE STAR is set in the same beautiful Lincolnshire Fens as Joy's crime novels. And there is even a cameo appearance from DS Marie Evans!

Joy Ellis is one of my favourite author's
I have all her books and this one is so different from all the Fens books. It is good to have a change of pace and a change of story lines. I expect Joy Ellis feels the same.

This book is a deviation from the usual crime fiction that Joy writes and I was therefore unsure what to expect.

The book begins when Stella is in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds and that is where the suspense begins on what develops as a rollercoaster ride through every emotion you have. Joy has very cleverly managed to portray the characters so the reader really gets into their head and can feel all the emotions. It is gripping and the reader just turns page after page until the ending which is a real curve ball. Every time I thought I had worked out where the book was going another twist appeared I can honestly say this is one of the best most gripping reads I have had the pleasure to read for a long time that wasn’t a 'thriller'. It was a very refreshing change from the norm and it shows the author is talented at more than one genre.

Stella is a policewoman who ended up in a life threatening situation while off duty and ends up putting her own life in danger in an attempt to save the lives of innocent civilians. She ends up seriously injured in hospital with life changing injuries.

Her partner, Robbie also suffers as a result of Stella's injuries as he feels guilty that he wasn’t able to save her. Their boss is an unfeeling woman who abandons Stella in spite of her bravery and gives Robbie a hard time pushing him over the edge.

The book has many characters. All of them unique and well developed and Joy has also managed to bring characters from one of her crime fiction series' into this book making it an excellent side story.

A well written and interesting story that ultimately was quite hard to put down. I struggled with the change of genre to begin with but slowly got to become comfortable with the book and the storyline. Not what I would normally read but well worth trying as something new. Give it a try.

Thanks to Joffee Books for the chance to review the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected 26 April 2017
By D. Zendel - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This is labeled on the cover as “an emotional page turner about loss, love and recovery.” Normally something with that high level of sappiness would cause me to run the other way, but I received a proof copy from the publisher, so I felt obligated to at least give it a go.

And I’m glad I did. It wasn’t sappy at all. It’s a lyrically written, hope-filled standalone novel about Stella, a British Detective Sergeant, who gets shot twice while on duty, once in the side and once in the head, and what happens to her on the long road to recovery. It also follows the stories of those who love and care for her and depicts how her shooting ripples out into her community.

Pre-shooting, Stella was an avid urban explorer, a skilled and talented photographer, an extreme sports enthusiast, a mentor to other officers, and one of the best cops in her district. Post-shooting, she struggles with being … not a cop, not an extreme sports devotee, not stable, not anything she recognizes because “ … the underpinning of her whole life had been knocked away from under her. She hardly recognized the woman she had become. … Her reason for being had gone, stolen in the blink of an eye.”

In addition to trying to figure out what happened to her, Stella struggles to figure out where to go next. She’s supported in this by her marathon running grandmother, her former partner (himself lost because he’s suddenly a very good second without a leader), her grandmother’s longtime love, her ex-husband (who may still be in love with her), his new wife, who’s a friend of Stella’s (it was a very civil divorce), and Stella’s first love.

One of the fun things about this book was that the author wove in two characters from one of her other series, DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans of the Fenland police. (Evans and Stella worked together on a case and remained friendly). Jackman and Evans are two of my new favorite characters, and seeing them pop up in this novel was a treat. It added to the realism of the story.

My hope is that Stella gets her own series. I would find it fascinating to watch her reconcile her life now with what it used to be, still solving crimes somehow, or interacting with her former mates, including Jackman and Evans, helping others with her same problems progress. I got very attached to these characters very quickly and it saddens me to think this is a one-off.

As I said, I did receive a free proof copy from the publisher, but I have since purchased the book because I am a fan of the author’s Jackman and Evans series, and because it’s something I would want to re-read. The author has another series, involving DI Nikki Galena, and while I haven’t read those yet, I plan to. Stella’s story was a really nice mix of police procedural and chick lit, with a light touch of romance and self-discovery. I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Tremendous Effort! 29 April 2017
By DOUGLAS G PERRY - Published on Amazon.com

I just finished "Guide Star" and am a bit sad that it's over. Perhaps there are plans for a sequel to continue the paths of the characters? I have thoroughly enjoyed the prior 8 police procedural books she's written, and as a result, has become my favorite author. The characters in each of her books have tremendous depth and, more often than not, real life problems which the readers can relate. I look forward to reading more by this wonderful author.

I have enjoyed Joy Ellis' mysteries set on the English fens and I was curious to read this book in a different genre. I'm so glad that I did as it was a very good read. I enjoyed the characters and liked learning about urbexing.

It's a good mystery without a lot of violence. Just the right amount of emotions and intrigue. I enjoyed the ride.

The book has many characters. All of them unique and well developed and Joy has also managed to bring characters from one of her crime fiction series' into this book making it an excellent side story.

Stella struggles with her recovery as she tries to find a way forward through a difficult rehabilitation pysically and mentally as she sees the job she worked towards and loved so much is out of reach. Her beloved Gran puts her heart at risk to help Stella by contacting an old friend.

I was very interested to learn about Urbexing and again Joy opened my eyes to things I hadn't considered such as how Urbexers document decay before it is lost forever. At first this seemed a very strange and pointless thing to do but now my eyes have been opened and I have found I look at old buildings in a completely different light.

This is an excellent book and well worth the 5 stars. I would like to read more of this type of book as spin offs to the crime fiction as it brings the people to life and makes a refreshing change from the bad things in life.

The title is perfect but I will let you read the book to find out why that is.

A very big thank you to Joffe Books for providing me with an advance copy of this book.
