This is a really powerful story, with twists and turns that keep you guessing. At one stage I was with the main character 'Karen' - I didn't know who to trust.

A good story that pierces the heart. Love the way horses are a large part of the story. I am not sure how the character Karen and her horse survived, but I'm so glad they did.

I would've given 5 stars if the writing was better. There were times when I was lost trying to figure out what had happened.

Thank you T J Loveless for the way you handled PTSD in this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chilling, Thrilling, Suspenseful Read. Try to get through this one without feeling something. 16 February 2014
By Kindle Customer - Published on

Karen - one tough woman. Five Alarm - one cool, tough horse. One woman's attempt to get thru everything life throws at her. That is what Fractured Steel was to me. If you want romance, this isn't it, unless a woman figuring out how to love herself and her way back into her life counts . What this book does give the reader is a look at PTSD and anxiety, both of which I can relate to, all while incorporating suspense, mystery, chills and thrills.

This is the book I will recommend to everyone this year. It is not like anything I have read by T.J. Loveless. It is not like anything I have read in years, if ever. I want more. I want books to make me feel like this one did. Even if the feelings are raw and fractured.

I am a fan of T.J. Loveless. I have read everything she has published to date. But if you read one book by her, read this one. And then tell me it didn't affect you in some way. It did me, right to my core.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author T.J. Loveless delivers an action packed thrill ride with Fractured Steel. 28 February 2014

Author T.J. Loveless delivers an action packed thrill ride with Fractured Steel. A female war hero, a horse worth millions, and espionage—those three things alone scream action. Add in a family of psychopaths and international government secrets and you have something that takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride and leaves you exhausted, awe struck, and affected at the end.

Karen Barnes is the main character. She is trying to readjust to civilian life on her late father’s horse farm when all hell breaks lose. The first couple of chapters were a little touch and go for me because there are certain subjects that I just like to avoid. Physical abuse, animal cruelty, and sexual abuse are all present but nothing is overly graphic. They are part of Karen’s story but not her whole story and I think that is what makes this book one to remember.

It isn’t a rainbow and butterflies story. It is a dark story that showcases the worst and the best in people. The heroine is scarred and broken and at times you find yourself agreeing with her that there is only so much that one person should have to endure. To say she is a survivor is an understatement. She suffers, she fights, and then she suffers even more. She is a survivor that at times is barely surviving but it is that smallest bit of hope, anger, and strength that keeps her going for another day. That was the message that I came away with at the end of this book. That life can sometimes be impossibly horrible but as long as we continue to fight then there is a chance of a better tomorrow.

Fractured Steel features several characters that are dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The characters are all are at varied stages of recovery but for me the message was clear; healing takes time, the pain is real, and sometimes the scars that aren’t visible take the longest to heal.

This book will be in my list of top ten reads for the year. Not because it made me smile or laugh but because it made me feel, think, hope and appreciate the strength that it takes to survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Completely unexpected powerful story of endurance in a traumatic world 19 October 2014

A female soldier who survived a tour in Iraq and has returned home to try to live a quieter life again, suffers from PTSD and finds herself embroiled in more espionage when a mysterious and dangerous man tries to board a stolen horse worth millions, in her stable.
I don't even know where to begin with this one as it was so out of my usual genre of books...part mystery, part dark kidnapping, part family saga and part government spy thriller...this story was chock full of so much action and some seriously intense moments, that I was completely involved. The knowledge and expert descriptions of horses and their care was phenomenal and it made me want to learn more about these powerful creatures. The suffering, both physical and mental that our heroine Karen endures was so descriptively detailed and realistic, that I felt like I was feeling every one of her hurts and emotions as well. It was one of those intense adventures that you don't know who to believe, what will happen next and keeps you on edge, guessing till the end.
A powerful and healing look at one woman's ordeal as she goes through what many soldiers must have who came back wounded from war and suffering from PTSD...and her triumphant return to the real world and some sense of living again.
Highly recommend and be warned, it is at times very violent and brutal, but contains only one scene of sexual abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star read for a 5 Star Author. 31 May 2015

I had never heard of TJ Loveless before I purchased this book, I found it on accident while I was searching for something new to read and I can honestly say it was a very happy accident for me.

The story of Captain Karen Barnes is truly a heartfelt tale of a wounded soldier and her fight to remain intact after coming home from war. While it touches on her time spent overseas that's not the focus of our story, but rather just a snippet of her background and why she is who she is. The story picks up after she's home and a new war brews on her home turf that revolves around her and a horse named Five-Alarm.

For the first time in a long time, I actually felt like I was right there alongside our heroine. TJ is a true story-teller that makes you feel what you're reading and transports you from the real world into the book world. The descriptions of every place and the details of every situation make you truly feel what our heroine is feeling and why she's feeling that way.

This story is full of mystery, action, suspense, and surprises. It's very fast paced and you find yourself wondering if Karen will ever catch a break so that you can catch your breath. It was difficult to put down and had me thinking about it when I was unable to pick it up and read. I enjoyed the story and the writing so much that I purchased the spin-off book from this one, as well as another written by this author.

While there is one explicit scene the book contains no other sexual content beyond that one scene, and I don't want to spoil the story for anyone I do think that I should give you a fair warning though because that one scene is graphic and gut wrenching.
