As explained in the introduction, this is a parody of hard science fiction stories from the genre's "golden age". Now, I don't remember having ever read any sci-fi shorts or novels from that era. Therefore, it could be argued that I'm not this story's intended target audience, because in theory I shouldn't be able to "get" the kind of humor the author went for. But in practice, I loved this story and I had a great time reading it. The author skillfully relies on narrative and dialogue to convert completely mundane situations into bizarre--and hilarious--scenes.
Passages like the following had me laughing out loud: "She opened the refrigeration unit and removed two containers made of pressed paper coated with a protective plastic layer. One of these cartons contained the secretions of the mammary glands of Bos taurus taurus, which were rich in calcium, iron and other vital minerals. The other carton contained juice made from the concentrated pulp of the Citrus sinensis fruit, which was rich in Vitamin C." Yes, I know this kind of humor might not appeal to the masses, but for me it does work beautifully. I'll make sure to read more stories in this series!
