This is an interesting take on both hard-boiled mysteries and urban fantasy. Avoiding spoilers, lets just say that the author manages to introduce interesting potential while avoiding the MarySue trap so many supernatural stories fall into, where our hero/heroine can immediately access all their newfound abilities (and more) with no learning curve. I’m looking forward to the characters growing and developing in future installments, please.
Disclosure up front, I'm related to the author so not a disinterested party. When I read, view, or listen to the works on an artist, writer, or musician that I know sometimes I am thinking about that creative person during the experience as in "oh, dear, how am I going to tell them this product isn't working". Reading this book, I wasn't thinking about Helen, I was thinking about Raf and Clara and whatever was going to happen next. Loved the late 1940's vibe, the humor, the pacing, and the surprises.
I hadn't read this genre or point of view for awhile. It had some humorous bits, the plot moved well, and it was pretty believable. The whole movie played out in my head in black and white,as it could be,if ever it becomes one.It was my first time read in this author--Highly recommend her.

This genre mashup of 1940s detective/vampire novel must have been a challenge for Helen Krummenacker to write, but she pulled it off beautfully. She kept the pace flowing effortlessly while maintaining the suspense, and throwing in a touch of romance and humor. For a debut novel, this deserves high praise.
