Terrible. I wanted a real insider view of the campaign and was really disappointed. No goss, no real insights, nothing particularly interesting. In fact, it was laughably bad in places - the story about Tony Abbott emerging from the toilets and the author wondering whether they sat on the same toilet seat - SERIOUSLY!?!
I found the author to be quite whiny, and honestly, too many sob stories about missing his girlfriend.. mate, you were on the road for 5 weeks! How do you think soldiers feel when they get sent to war zones for months on end, leaving their children behind? You were flying around Australia, within easy phone contact! Plenty of couples do this every day, and the tales of your tears made it sound like a teenage romance. Plus it was irrelevant to the main game, the election campaign.
Perhaps the best tidbit was the use of the "pooling" technique, but this was just glossed over. I want to know who are the favoured journalists (and why) what's the politics between the outlets, how do the press secretaries pick their allies and who are they enemies. There were hints of tension between journos/outlets, but no-names given. I suppose it's because it's all recent history and the author is still in the field, so doesn't want to trod on toes.
I think I'll stick to more seasoned and connected journos' tomes in the future.
