Product description

Product Description

Flight from Syria: Refugee Stories features the writing and photography of nine Pulitzer Center grantees– journalists who reported on Syrian refugees between 2012 and 2015. Their travels took them from Syria to Sweden, and from crowded camps to cramped apartments in city suburbs. Each of the journalists– Hugh Eakin, Lauren Gelfond Feldinger, Stephen Franklin, Joanna Kakissis, Alia Malek, Holly Pickett, Alisa Roth, Alice Su, and Selin Thomas– lends a unique perspective. Originally published in Al Jazeera, BBC News, Guernica, In These Times, Marketplace, NPR, The Atlantic and The New York Review of Books, these stories tell of an abandoned homeland, an indifferent world, and an uncertain future. They trace the history of one of the biggest displacements of modern times– providing a testament to the suffering and courage of those who fled.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very informative and enlightening 30 November 2015

I am from the United States and, know that I don't have to faces bombs and war everyday. Someone wrote before that if you are born in a place that is mostly stable without bombs going off around you that you won the geographic lottery. In a way that is true. However a person's homeland will always be their homeland, which they want to see, flourish. Many people ignorantly think of refugees as burdens that want to take from their country but in reality most want to see their own homes flourish but more than anything want a place to call home. I hear disparaging remarks of refugees sometimes and it reminds,me no matter where you live ignorance will, always be present. I think this, book should be read by anyone who has, misguided about welcoming people different than them in to their country and home. Thanks to all th err hard working journalists and volunteers for trying to make the world a better and more c ok passionate world

5.0 out of 5 stars Illustrative and informative 15 January 2016

This book contains a collection of very evocative and compelling articles about the struggles of Syrians as they flee violence. The writing and photos are top-notch. I feel more connected and informed to the struggles of these people and the difficult but imperative role of the international community in providing aid.

The compilation of stories in this book will help the reader to a better understanding of the plight of the Syrian refugees. I recommend reading to recognize what a serious situation it has become in war-torn Syria as well as it's surrounding countries.
5.0 out of 5 stars A snapshot of the crisis in a series of short pieces. 14 April 2016

This collection of short pieces is a wonderful insight into the refugee crisis in Syria, not only for the Syrians but for double refugees from Palestine and even Armenia, as well as for how the crisis impacts those in surrounding countries. Terrific writing and a quick, helpful read.
