Once again, Annie West proves that a single moment can change lives, that with the right prod someone can make a life-turning decision. For both Raffaele and Lily, this moment comes when they meet and interact. On the first glance, it only seems to be Raffaele who pushes Lily to leap over her self-erected wall and crawl out of her shell. But when you look deeper, Lily is just as cataclysmic for him, as she makes him question his emotionless and superior, almost ruthless behaviour. Both find in the other what they can’t but secretly want to be. Both have a mirror thrown in front of their faces (literally and metaphorically) and finally open their eyes to the truth.
To me, this was more a story about redemption, revelations, reassurance and reassessments than about revenge. Raffaele reveals himself as having a kind heart beneath the hard exterior, something the reader suspects all along because of the way he wants to avenge his sister. And Lily turns from a snail inside its snail’s house into a beautiful butterfly spreading her wings and daring to shine. It’s not that she didn’t have the sparkle before – for she is an inherently strong, intelligent and determined woman – but to her own eyes it had been dulled over time, and Raffa is the one who makes her really live again. In turn, she finds a chink in his armour and gets under his skin, bringing out the best in him, although he already is an admirable alpha-male hero who has made it from rags to riches and values fairness.
If you enjoy fast-paced romance with amazing chemistry between the leading pair, a heroine that is anything but weak despite the internal and external scarring, a hero who is dashing and a little dangerous, and a story that reaches its happy ending against all odds, then you’ll love this novel as much as I did.
Lily is a strong woman, another rarity in short romances. So a very enjoyable read
Raffaele is not your everyday millionaire. Sure he got his personal rage but he's not as ruthless as I thought he would be. He's surprisingly gentle with Lily and I love it. Lily, our heroine, is also not typical. She's fragile but as we read, we can see and feel her strength and her will to win. I adore her!
But again, I was hoping for more drama. More trouble in paradise and the great closure of Bradshaw. I think the ending is a bit rushed so it's not exactly satisfying. But overall I enjoyed this book so much! My first Annie West book and certainly not the last. Look forward to read more!
