Wow! I love this series! I've just have my Steel & Stone fix to tide me over until Book 4.

This novella features Seiya and Lyre and I enjoyed getting to know them better. I am not a fan of Seiya and though she didn't win me over, I did get to see things from her perspective. There is so much more to Lyre than everyone sees and he shines in this novella. I love how he sticks up for Piper and doesn't give up when escape seems impossible.

Ms Marie's writing style is magic and it certainly kept me spellbound.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Closer Look at Lyre's Hidden Depth 19 March 2016
By Kristen Burns - Published on Amazon.com

3 Stars

As soon as this was released, I immediately bought it without hesitation. I don't have to stop to consider when it comes to this series.

All the same, I don't really consider this part of the series, if that makes any sense. To me it's just a little, extra side piece that I don't factor in when I think about my love for the series because it wasn't told from Piper's POV. And it was about what I expected, considering that.

The thing is, I don't like Seiya. I did understand her character a little more after reading this, but I don't think she'll ever be someone I love. That's ok though. Especially when...

I love Lyre so much! I love him in this I-really-want-to-be-best-friends-with-him kinda way. I've never felt that way about a character before. He's so fun and playful and loyal and kind. But it's becoming more and more clear that he's also intelligent and driven with a rich backstory of his own. This was definitely a different side of him, just one of his many sides.

Was this short story worth it? Absolutely! Anything and everything Steel & Stone is worth it to me, and the look into Lyre's hidden depth was interesting. But it still wasn't exceptional the way the other books are.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great look into both Seiya and Lyre's background. 24 August 2015

I absolutely adore the Steel and Sword series by Annette Marie and was excited to see that this short story was released to tide us readers over until Reap the Shadows releases in October of 2015. This was a very well done short story and I enjoyed it a lot.

This book picks up right after the battle in book 3. Seiya and Lyre were taken prisoner by the Maiysis and are both wearing magic suppressing collars. They must work together to survive and escape imprisonment before Seiya is sold back into captivity in Asphodel and Lyre is sold to his family.

This story felt a bit rushed and was too short, but it was still well written and very engaging.

We learn a lot of about Seiya and her time imprisoned in Asphodel. We also learn a bit more about why she hates Piper so much and her history with Ash. I still don’t like Seiya and I still think she’s an ungrateful whiner, but it was nice to learn some of her background.

The most interesting part of the story was learning some of Lyre’s background. He works some seriously wicked magic in this book and it was interesting to see him as a powerful and dangerous character rather than the light-hearted flirt we usually see.

Additionally Maiysis is in the story a bit and his actions remain unpredictable and mysterious.

The story ends on a cliffhanger and was fairly unsatisfying. I can only assume the unresolved issues will be addressed in Reap the Shadows.

Overall this was a quick and entertaining read. I really enjoyed learning more background on both Seiya and Lyre. I would definitely recommend picking this up if you are a fan of this series. I really love this series and recommend the series as a whole if you are a fan of urban fantasy. I am super excited to read Reap the Shadows when it release in October.

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that stands well on its own even without it's main protagonists!! 11 November 2015

So I know what you may be thinking... Ash and Piper aren't in this book? No long, romantic looks? No sexy, brooding Draconian-ness? No sassy kick-ass leading lady??

Well fear not, because this short, sweet novella does just fine on its own EVEN WITHOUT ASH AND PIPER. Trust me, I had a hard time believing it myself. This short story gives us a glimpse at Lyre and Seiya's time in captivity at the Ra Embassy. We get a closer look at what makes Seiya tick, as well as an intriguing glimpse into Lyre's past, which we have yet to get thus far!! You will probably read this entire book in under an hour. It's amazing! Lyre and Seiya are more interesting than ever! I have never had so much appreciation for their characters!
5.0 out of 5 stars Escape Or Die 29 February 2016

This series must be read in order. The first book is Chase The Dark. The second book is Bind The Soul. The third book is Yield The Night. This is the fourth book. I can't wait to read Reap The Shadows!

Seiya is singleminded when it comes the her brother Ash's safety. Noone and nothing is allowed to jeopardize it ever! This causes strife within their group... And quite possibly led to the situation she and Lyre are in now. Waking dazed in a prision cell from the drugs the Ras used on them, she has trouble remembering what has happened. Where are they exactly? Is Lyre okay? Has Ash been captured as well? How will they ever get free wearing magic blocking collars?

***This series is suitable for adult readers who enjoy a little horror in their urban fantasy action suspense thriller adventures filled with mystery and intrigue along with a dash or two of romance :)
5.0 out of 5 stars Seiya's growth shines 22 October 2015

This was a welcome addition to the universe, mainly because it further fleshed out Lyre's and Seiya's characters. I'm still not fond of Seiya after this short story, but I appreciated that she grew during it and I can accept that she's on the road to being a better person as she starts to think beyond just herself.

The story greatly increased my curiosity in and appreciation for Lyre, though. I absolutely loved seeing the other side that we knew existed because of the solidity of his friendship with Ash and the hints of his power that have been dropped in the previous stories. I find it interesting that Seiya is the one to see this side first, rather than Piper...except of course this is Seiya's story!

As for the ending...it both made perfect sense and drove me insane. It's not a true cliffhanger, but there's enough unresolved at the end of the story that you know exactly where the next story is going to go.

Thanks for this peek into Seiya's world!
