After six weeks it started making loud sounds each time the wheel pedals turned, loud thump sounds like something was broken inside, and turning the wheel became more hard.
After inspecting the bike, it became clear that the “ball bearing cage” was damaged and broken.
Usage of the bike: Once a day for 25 minutes at 16mph. I’m 5"7 and weigh 140lb.
My first impression of the bike was that it was a great investment. The bike itself is nice, a perfect size, and the little computer that tracks your progress is very helpful. However I cannot use the bike anymore because “ball bearing cage” is damaged and broken making the bike useless. This experience has left me very disappointed, I cannot use my Sunny exercise bike. It’s a waste of money. I thought that I would be able to use it for about +3 years but it only lasted less than 2 months.
I will contact Amazon & the manufacture to see what could be done regarding this issue.
The first problem was a obnoxiously loud clicking noise coming from around the flywheel as I pedaled. I traced this to the small plastic sensor attached to the flywheel that connects to the computer. The plastic was slightly deformed/broken causing it to catch every revolution and make a clicking sound. I simply disconnected the small metal piece (just one screw holding it) that connects to the flywheel and interfaces with the plastic sensor. This renders the computer useless, but I don't need it anyway. All it's good for is keeping time, and I wear a watch for that. Problem solved, no more clicking.
The second problem was when I noticed a ball bearing on the floor, and an increasingly loud grinding sound when I pedaled. This time the sound was coming from the crank. Upon inspection I noticed significant play in the crank, so I disassembled it. The nuts were overtightened, causing the ball bearing assembly to become bent and disfigured, allowing the ball bearings to fall out of place. So how did a ball bearing end up on my floor before I ever took the crank apart? Well, inside, where the crank passes through the frame, there is a small hole that leads down the rear leg of the bike. On the bottom of that leg is another hole, and a bearing fits right through it. A bearing came loose because of the disfigured bearing assembly, and fell down the hole. It must have been damaged before I ever rode it, as the bearing could have only escaped before I put the rear stabilizing arm on.
So now I need to go to a bike shop and get a new ball bearing set-up. I could contact Sunny, and see if they could send me one, but honestly I've had enough headache with this thing, and I don't feel like waiting for them to send me a part. This hassle could be completely avoided if the people at the Sunny factory took the time to realize that you can't just crank down as hard as you want on crank bearings. They aren't meant to take that kind of force. For anyone else with similar noises, I encourage you to inspect your bikes. I have a feeling this happens pretty often. Once I get this fixed, I think the bike will perform decently enough. But for anyone who doesn't have the tools or patience to fix things that shouldn't arrive broken, I'd think twice before making this purchase.
First impression: this is an amazing bang for your buck. It’s not as pleasing to the eye as some, but does the trick! It is small in length, but sturdy. Doesn’t take up too much room.
Assembly: Assembly was a breeze. All the nuts, washers, everything was already threaded in. You had to unscrew but you know exactly what goes where. It took me around 30 minutes with no instructions. It came with them but I am stubborn. Hardest part was one pedal. The nut was on tighter than expected.
First ride: the first 5.5 miles at 30 minutes was pretty smooth. Absolutely nothing to complain about.
I plan on riding this nightly for at least 30 minutes until my surgery on 4/4. I will update the day before surgery.
Update: I have 4 rides on this. I only have 2 complaints. The pedals. they have reflectors, which I think is goofy. The pedals have spikes like normal bike pedals. Personally, I do not like that. I would like to ride in my house with no shoes. I still do, but it it tough! Second, the seat. the seat is not interchangeable. Neither make me want to return it, but just something to consider.
