HAUNTING AND MEMORABLE - 5+STARS
Reviewed in Australia on 21 August 2019
Standalone 'The First Girl Child' is simply a brilliant read! It is beautifully slowish-paced, as it unpacks over a period of twenty years. So for readers who love deeply developed characters (the ordinarily extraordinary), a captivating plot and vivid imagery - it will be an absolute treat.
The Nordic-myth-influenced tale weaves many elements: mystique, family, power, misogony, adventure, blood runes and mystery. It also embraces Amy Harmon's signature themes of love, loss, sacrifice and redemption. Finally, the book delves into 'the lot' of women - their strengths as well as their lack of clout. Yes, this book is multilayered!
Amy's writing is authentic and natural, but it's also sensitive and exposed. There is a feel of ruggedness, perhaps flavoured by the setting, and at the same time, there is humour and cleverness.
What a talented and dedicated story-teller she is and how privileged we are to read her work.
