Product Description

Elsa's family grows more unkind by the week. Her boss, a seven-foot-tall rage demon, has control of everything but his anger. And her cat wants to eat her. Things could be better.

In a world where one's Animal Affinity is a sign of maturity and worth, Elsa's inability to demonstrate hers is becoming more than a disappointing nuisance; it's becoming a danger. She has no confidence she'll ever conquer her Plainness by "blossoming." She also fears both the wolf packs that prowl her neighborhood and being stuck in a life plummeting rapidly from lackluster to perilous. Fortunately, she has a cousin and a co-worker who know her better than she knows herself and can see through to what society won't.

FINIS. is the magic realism of our time, a story of finding one's way to the end of things, of persevering through the dregs of life to discover something more.

PLEASE NOTE:  Only the paperback edition of this book is illustrated. The ebook edition contains no illustrations.

"It's not often I get that viscerally emotional on behalf of a fictional character. In a setting of overt fantasy, Angélique Jamail has created some of the most real people I've encountered via text in a long time." -- Ari Marmell (author of HOT LEAD, COLD IRON)

"A silver vein of irony runs through Angélique Jamail's fantastic FINIS. It is a witty tale of conformity, prejudice, and transformation, in a world that is disturbing as much for its familiarity as for its strangeness. In a place where everyone is different, Elsa is the wrong kind of different, and that means facing pity, discrimination, danger, and sharp teeth. Dive into this story, readers, and confront them for yourself; it may just change the way you feel about things..." -- Marie Marshall (author of THE EVERYWHEN ANGELS)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great story. However 12 August 2014

This is a great story. However, for as much as one learns about the characters, there's so much that we don't know. And frankly, we (I speak for all of us) want to know, because the story is so appealing; the premise is thought-provoking, and the quality of the writing is superb. As the story develops, and we begin to have insight into Elsa's life, it's easy to identify with her plight. She's very real in her vulnerability and resolve, and you can't help but want to see her overcome the layered obstacles in her path. And as to the writing, have you ever savored a sentence? That is to say, have you ever been struck by how well-crafted a statement is, that you read it several times in a row because the expression of the idea or the description is that good? I found myself doing that with this story. This is both a story and a work of art. I hope this is just the beginning of our introduction to Elsa.

I loved this sweet, easy to pick up, and thoughtful book that reflected the coming-of-age that rears its head not only in adolescence, but into adulthood. A rewarding read.

Jamail’s description of Elsa’s floundering to find herself, allows the reader to connect immediately with Elsa. The struggles she faces trying to find her place in this world are relatable to many-especially young adults starting college, or their first job. The depictions of the ‘characters’ in Elsa’s life—in particular her boss—have a strong resemblance to people we know in our own lives. Even though Finis is a novella, making it a quick read, it will leave you wanting to know more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story 6 August 2015

A lovely coming-of-age story about a young woman who is struggling to realize who she is meant to be. It captures the struggle many post-college graduates face trying to find a career they'll be happy in, but with a beautiful supernatural allegory. Jamail paints a fascinating world, and I look forward to reading more books of hers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Finis has a wonderful premise that begs further exploration 11 September 2014

Finis has a wonderful premise that begs further exploration. Powerful and emotional scenes woven into an intriguing fantasy world whose biggest flaw is that it ends much too quickly. A bit of a slow start, this introductory novellette really grabs hold of the reader at the end and leaves you wanting more.
