In this trilogy, guardians, in the form of sentient horses known as Finest, aid and shepherd their human charges, the Fallen Favorites.
This book grabbed me from page one and wouldn’t let go. Rabe’s detailed descriptions engage every one of the reader’s six senses, and she weaves the descriptions into the fabric of the story so skillfully it made me feel as if I was right there, seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and feeling the action unfold.
Gallant-Stallion, a Finest, is receiving his first assignment to shepherd one of the Fallen Favorites of Paard-Peran. He is left bewildered after his mentor is killed by evil forces before revealing to Gallant-Stallion the identity of his charge. The young Finest struggles with his own doubts and inexperience as he does his best to safeguard and guide two orphans, Meven and Kalantha, one of whom he believes to be his charge, as evil assassin birds seeks to destroy them as they destroyed Gallant-Stallion’s mentor and his mentor’s charge, the young Prince who was cousin to the two orphans the Finest seeks to shepherd.
An action-packed page-turner set against a background of politics, religion, and magic, this is much more than a coming of age story (as Meven becomes the youngest King in the history of Galmier) or a mystery (who controls the evil assassin birds and why do they want Meven and his sister, Kal, dead?), although it contains elements of both. A wonderful beginning to the Finest Trilogy! I would recommend this book to anyone who likes horses, birds, or magic, who is a fan of Jean Rabe’s writing, or who appreciates good writing and a captivating story.
