Product Description

Colonel Gabriel de Laurent departed for the war intending to die.

After a decade of bloodstained battlegrounds while fighting in Napoleon's army, Gabriel returns to the streets of Paris a shattered and haunted soul. Plagued by inner demons, he swallows the barrel of his flintlock pistol and pulls the trigger.

But fate has a different plan.

Ariah Larochelle is a survivor. Orphaned at twelve and victim to a devastating crime, she has learned to keep her back to walls and to trust no one. But when she finds a gravely injured soldier washed up on the River Seine, she's moved by compassion. In spite of her reservations, she rescues him from the icy water and brings him into her home.

Now scarred inside and out, Gabriel discovers a kindred spirit in Ariah - and feelings he imagined lost forever reawaken as he observes her strength in the face of adversity. But when Ariah's own lethal secrets unfold, their new love is threatened by ancient ghosts. Can Gabriel and Ariah find hope in the wreckage of their pasts - or will the cycle of history repeat again?

Perfect for fans of Gaelen Foley's Lord of Ice and Judith James's Broken Wing, Finding Gabriel features all the dark romance, searing passion, and historical intrigue of The Phantom of the Opera and Les Misérables.

With its stunning opening chapter, I was hooked on this novel -- deeply hooked. From the horribly disfigured, tragically romantic hero, to the kind and loving heroine, to the fascinating storyline, I enjoyed this novel from first page to last. The romance between the two unfolds slowly, steadily, built out of respect and admiration. Both had painful pasts, both face an uncertain future, but as their emotional bonds strengthen, so does the story. At times, the story left me in tears. heartbroken, yet at other times, I cheered or laughed. Sometimes, the flashbacks slowed the story, but that is a small matter. The strength of this story is in the plot and the deeply complex characters that are so vivid, so real, they completely won me over. Definitely not your run-of-the mill romance, this is a great book for those who are not big fans of that genre to try out. I definitely recommend this book!

Thank you to the author and publisher. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Will the sequences of antiquity echo again? Ariah and Gabrial are searching for courage in the ruins of their past. Spirits of the former are upsetting their fresh passion due to Ariah’s enigmas unraveling. Gabriel has detected Ariah’s strong character in the midst of danger. She has become his confidant, and he grows stronger in her presences. Ariah has not had an easy life, however in spite of the plate she was served, she’d rescued Gabriel from the frigid river and brought him back to her dwelling place. She had been moved by empathy for his well-being as he lay injured on the river bank. Ariah herself is no stranger to adversity being left parent-less at a tender age as well as a victim of a scandalous offense. Luckily providence had lit a path for her when she met Gabriel, though she will soon find out he had something tragic planned prior to meeting her. This novel leads you through a passage of calamity and conquest until love turns all around. The plot is realistic and stirs up the senses. I love time period romance and this is a wonderful one. Suited for 18 and older due to adult content.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love Phantom of the Opera and were disappointed with the non HEA.. you get a better one here! 4 September 2015

WOW... just wow... I am blown away by the Gabriel, the story was angsty and heartbreaking and wonderful.

I am a huge phantom the opera fan and I can say that it was a love that was fulfilled in this book, you ache for the hero and heroine in this wonderful tale...there is so much drama and trauma and secrets and telling you without telling you is hard....

Gabriel is a hero who has seen too much, experienced too much , has lost too much.
Ariah is a heroine who has had more than her share of angst and trauma and is raising her daughter emmaline....there is MUCH story there....but to me the heart of it is Gabriel and Ariah falling in love...her giving him hope and love... it was a beautiful story and so glad I was able to read it..bravo!

"Gabriel de Laurent was far from a superstitious or spiritual man. And yet the feeling he had was unshakable. Ariah Larochelle had found him for a reason."

So let me just start off by saying this- I have never really been a fan of historical romances. For some reason, I just couldn't get into a lot of them. But, thanks to Rachel L. Demeter, I do believe I can now call myself a historical romance fan! This is the second book I have read from her, and I have loved both of them.

Her writing is just beautiful; it's pure poetry. The book completely immerses you into Gabriel and Ariah's world and you truly feel like you are living in the early 1800's right along with them. You feel the emotions they feel and your heart aches for ALL of the characters in the story, even the secondary ones!

Gabriel is a former soldier who can no longer deal with the ghosts of his past. Hoping for a way out, he puts a pistol in his mouth and watches as his world fades to black. Ariah happens upon him half submerged in the Siene and bleeding profusely from what she later finds out to be a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Ariah is a young woman whose past demons haunt her as well. A wife to a soldier whom she hasn't seen in years in no easy feat, especially since she alone is left to take care of her ill daughter and her half sister, Miriam.

Gabriel is none too happy with Ariah when he awakens due to the fact that he was certain he had killed himself. "Reality set in at full force. This was no angel. She was a burden, a barrier, a naive child. She was an unwanted interference in his life- an intruder who'd stolen his chance for peace." Bitter and resentful, Gabriel does his best to push Ariah away, but she is more strong-willed than he could have ever imagined. Can these two lost souls find solace in each other or will their demons eventually be their downfall?

I TOTALLY recommend this book to all of my fellow lovers of romance novels! I absolutely LOVED this book I cannot wait to read more from this author!

ps: Miriams story needs to happen... ::hint hint Rachel L. Demeter!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold and vivid 22 September 2015

Rachel L. Demeter always delivers heavy emotion and bold stories, and Finding Gabriel is definitely both of these things: emotional and bold! The story starts off with a bang (no pun intended) when Gabriel, a renowned colonel tormented by past demons, attempts to end his own life. This leads him to Ariah, a beautiful and compassionate mother who ends up becoming his saving grace and light. Ariah and Gabriel are both flawed, imperfect, and impossible not to love and admire. They are polar opposites in many ways, yet they fit together perfectly. The historical backdrop, which is set during the end of the Napoleonic Wars, makes the romance sparkle in breathtaking ways, as we witness Gabriel and Ariah's personal transformations and quests for hope during an era of despair and chaos. The story starts off with an enticing slow-burn pace before building momentum. The unexpected twists and turns kept me engaged all the way through, as well as a cast of very memorable secondary characters.

Demeter's style of writing has a spectacular way of pulling you into the pages. For those who prefer a causal read or more "distance" this may be off-putting. But for those who relish feeling everything the characters feel, who want to see and hear everything in the world and want to lose themselves within the remarkable history of a past time.... this is the author for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!! 24 January 2017

WOW...I am blown away by this amazing novel. What a captivating and gripping story! I loved the characters....Gabriel and Ariah. I became so involved in each of their stories, separately and together. It was quite an emotional ride, at times heartbreaking and torturous and other times so beautifully poignant and enchanting. Love in all its forms are represented here. The love of a child, the love of family, the love of a friend and true deep romantic love that has the power to give hope when there is none and heal the soul. Then there is the rapturous passion that only exists when two people come together who are so deeply in love that they can't take a breath without the other.

I couldn't put this engrossing book down, yet I also didn't want it to end. This is the type of novel I live for ...a deep, dark historical romance that grabs my heart and doesn't let go.
