This is a novel that requires perseverence. If it weren't for the fact that I know she's so good a writer I would have abandoned it pretty early on.....so be warned,it takes a long, long time to get going.
The establishing of background story is detailed, intense and lengthy....at one point I had to check that I was actually reading a Fenwick novel as the book was reading like a straightforward piece of literary fiction and not a crime novel at all.
However, when it does get going the body count starts to rise and the various pieces of the puzzle which IS interesting once you start to get the hang of it start to come together. Deaths in the family, money laundering, big business, prostitutes being killed elsewhere and as a sideline a serial killer...or is it...and why.
But for me the novel feels unengaging and distant, there is no sense of urgency or a need to find out what happens next until at least half way through. There are many characters and keeping track can be a chore...some are sketched in such a way as to be fascinating but then they're gone and their story is just left. It's a mix of crimes, physical, mental and emotional and the impact of the past on the present. I ended up having real sympathy for the killer...
It is a reasonable book that suddenly or should I say eventually hits it's stride beautifully and then, for me,falls away again. It doesn't live up to it's predecessor. If I'd read this first I doubt I would have read her other work.
So overall...it's ok...that is damning with faint praise I know,but I'm disappointed,

This is the second book by this author I have read.I like the characters of Fenwick Cooper and nightingale .they make a good team and compliment each other. The stories are complex enough to hold your attention and are believable.
I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who likes police procedures.

Slightly disappointed!

Have to admit, having read "Grave Doubts" with much enjoyment, I was looking forward to another Elizabeth Corley book. I didn't find this one anywhere near as gripping, however, and was slightly disappointed.
It seemed to consist too much of straightforward police work, rather than the more compelling story line of Grave Doubts. Nonetheless, I'll try another one to see if my confidence is restored!

Disappointing

Having read another novel by this writer which I thoroughly enjoyed I decided to try another but, sadly, this one let me down. I just could not get into it at all. The initial pages just dragged along aimlessly failing to grip my interest sufficiently to see it through.
