5 star read. Read on behalf of Books Lovers Emporium.

As a lover of crime, murder and detectives, this book was perfect. I believe this is book 10 of the series and whilst the books contain different stories, obviously the characters have developed. I will be reading from book 1. The story was easy to read as the author didn't complicate the story by adding hard to explain police jargon.

As well as murder, the book also focus's on Sam and Nick's relationship, which is beautiful. There are several sex scenes but the book very much focus on Sam's career and the murder of the FBI director. All characters are very strong and likeable, with the exception of Ramsey. However to know Sam and Ramsey's history you need to read previous book but it's briefly explained, only because Sam finds herself up against criminal charges!

It's a gripping book that I read in just over two days, whilst no chapter was left on a cliffhanger, it did leave me wanting to know more. Overall it really was an excellent book.

It was a bit slow to start but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. I have now read the second book in the series and have bought the third one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marie Force Does it again! 25 June 2010
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

I've read all the books by Marie Force and I have to say I like them all. This book, is slightly different to her previous books. In my opinion, this book's primary focus was mystery and suspense and the love story was secondary. The combination created a fun and exciting read.

Samantha, a DC Detective is assigned to the murder investigation of a young U.S. Senator. When she goes to the scene of the crime, she learns that the body was discovered by the Senator's best friend and Chief of Staff, Nick. Sam and Nick had previously met six years ago and had a one night stand. They have not seen each other or spoken since then. This unexpected reunion brings back a lot of memories to both of them as they try to work together to solve the murder. I couldn't put the book down trying to figure out who had killed the senator and what was going to happen between Nick and Sam.

This story if filled with lots of characters that were surprisingly well developed considering the length of the book. You come to love a few of them by the end. Some might find parts of this book too gruesome or violent, but if you can see past these, you will find yourself immersed in the plot from start to finish.

The hopeless romantic in me only wished the romance played a slightly bigger part in the book, but I read somewhere both Sam and Nick come back in Ms. Force's next book. So hopefully I will get more romance there and see what happens next! :) I cannot wait for her next book!
I highly recommend this book, it was a highly enjoyable read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging suspense, but hero too perfect to be real 9 August 2016

This is the first book I read by Marie Force, or more accurately, my first full length novel. I didn’t know her, but she was doing a joint chat with one of my favorite authors, and when I asked her to recommend a starting point for her books, she directed me to One Night With You, which at that time was free on Kindle. It’s a novella about a one-night stand that the two main protagonists of her Fatal series have six years prior to the opening of Fatal Affair. It is a prequel but as I understand it Marie Force wrote it recently, after the series was already well established. The one night of passion is quite momentous and actually a defining event for both protagonists and is alluded to in Fatal Affair. So Marie Force wrote the prequel to let fans know what exactly happened that night. I am mentioning all this because starting with the prequel novella obviously made my reading experience different than if I had started with Fatal Affair. Long story short: I liked the glimpses I got of Sam and Nick in the prequel enough to go out and buy Fatal Affair (or rather: I downloaded it with one click).

So here we are, six years later, when Sam and Nick meet again, over the dead body of a US senator. Nick was the senator’s top aide and discovered the gruesomely mutilated body after the senator failed to show up for an important meeting. Sam is the lead detective assigned to the case. Her last case ended in a disaster (not her fault, but she still feels responsible), her stomach is acting up and she really needs a success to salvage her career. These seem slightly less than ideal circumstances to rekindle an old flame, and Sam does fight her attraction to Nick, but he is just as gorgeous as she remembered him, and so she finally caves in…

I liked the mystery of the book, though I felt the resolution was a bit of a let-down and could have been handled differently. I also liked all the attention to detail with regard to police procedure, at the same time this was one of the areas I had problems with. I don’t know enough about police guidelines and whether it would be considered a conflict of interest if you investigate a case, where you have a history (however short) with one of the witnesses/potential suspects, without disclosing this fact to your superior. Or, for that matter, whether it is viewed as ethically correct if you (re-)start a relationship with a witness before the case is closed, especially if it’s very high profile. When her superiors learn of the relationship, they just sort of gloss over it and it is no big deal…

The other problem I had was actually the hero, because he is just so freaking perfect. Sam appears more a real person: she is difficult, has a chip on her shoulder about being a female detective and the daughter of the former commissioner, she tells white lies, she is a slob and she is emotinally closed-off. Nick, on the other hand, is not only good-looking, nice, tidy, he also has a gorgeous physique, has (or rather had) a well-paying job end is emotionally open, and on top of all that he is also a god in the sack. I’m fed-up with alpha-a**holes, but a character needs some rough edges to appear real.

Overall I liked the writing and tone and the suspense of this book very much, and also the well fleshed-out secondary characters, even though some of them stretched the limits of my suspension of disbelief. But I am certainly going to read the next installment in this series!
4.0 out of 5 stars Great suspenseful read! Good start to series. 21 July 2016

What a great start to a series that is still ongoing! Chief of Staff Nick was on his way to drag his best friend & boss, Senator John O'Conner, out of bed & to work. He has had to do this before so nothing seemed unusual until he entered the Senator's bedroom & discovered his friend had been murdered.

Sam is a police detective just back from leave. She was involved in a shooting that took its toll on her emotions & confidence. What a case for her first one back, a high profile high publicity murder. On top of that, the Chief of Staff just happens to be the man she had a one night stand with years ago that never called her afterwards. The chemistry is still there between them but she has to fight it so she doesn't get hurt again.

I loved this book. Marie uses her background to make sure that the police procedures & details are correct. The plot line is well thought out, complex & seemed free of any missteps. The characters were well developed & three dimensional. The supporting characters were just as well developed & helped to get you involved in the story. They helped to add to the balance of the story & the relationships between Sam & her dad were emotional to read. The conversations (dialogue) was true to life. She was able to express the emotions & feelings of the characters perfectly & bring rise to the tension with in the conversation. The killer is someone that I did not feel could do it but after the reveal, I could go back & pull bits & pieces that gave substance to the plot & it's ending. A truly masterful tale of suspense that managed to engage me throughout & is sending me on to book 2.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great First Book in the Series 28 July 2016

Fatal Affair is the first book in Marie Force's Fatal Series and I'll admit to already starting to pick up the others in the series. I love a good cop book and this first book intrigued me as to where the characters can go.

We first meet Nick, who stumbles into the murder of his best friend, Senator John O'Connor and quickly calls the police. To his shock, the detective that arrives on the scene is the woman that got away. Six years have passed but the connection between the two is still there. This is probably the first time I would say, read the first book and then pick up the prequel. I think it just adds something to have it read in that order because if you read it the other way around, and the way these characters clicked from the get go, you might get a little frustrated that they don't get together as quick the second time around. This is also entirely up to you.

Six years have passed and Detective Sergeant Sam Holland can't believe that Nick is standing in front of her and a suspect no less, to a murder of a senator. As she begins to try and pull together the pieces of the senator's murder and the hidden life he led, there's another secret to untangle. Why, after one of the most amazing nights of her life and the intense connection between them, did Nick never contact her again?

I'm leaving the review at that. I think saying anything more might spoil the book because it really does have some twists and turns that keep you guessing as to who the bad guy really is. I will say I enjoyed the heck out of this. I loved Nick and Sam's connection and their past together. Sam's partner is a riot and a I liked a lot of the other side characters. How they're portrayed makes it feel like they aren't just a side characters but more essential to the story and potentially have more influence as the series continues. I love it when the story isn't just focused on these two main characters, but also the interconnecting stories and lives of other characters that can affect them. I would definitely recommend to those who like a good cop book.

An exciting thriller by bestselling author Marie Force that will keep the reader hyptnotized as it brings you into the world of politics, suspense, murder most foul and a love rekindled, and this series and all the books included are must reads! .........After repeated efforts of trying to get his boss on the phone, Chief of Staff and political advisor Nicholas "Nick" Cappuano, couldn't believe that his best friend, U.S. Senator John O'Connor slept through his alarm when there were very important matters at hand. Why wasn't he answering his phone? What Nick didn't know, however, was that his day was about to get worse as he entered the townhouse only to discover his friend brutally murdered. He thought as he mourned his friend that his heart couldn't feel anymore empty, until he heard her voice and he wanted to melt right through the floor. Sam! How could he ever forget the one woman that he once shared a passionate night with only for her to turn around and not answer any of his calls when she promised she would but didn't? Homicide detective sargeant, Samantha "Sam" Holland, couldn't believe that she was actually seeing Nick Cappuano at her crime scene or that he once broke her heart six long years ago when he promised to call her, but didn't? Why? As much as she tried, she was not only cold but hostile towards him but when the truth came out and she discovered who the culprit was behind her missed messages, it wouldn't be long before Nick would want to rekindle something so special and real, they once shared so long ago that he never wanted it to end, not now, not ever! After coming back to the force after a devasting case, Sam knew that this was the case to bring her career back on top and not only that, she would have to keep her distance from Nick since he was a material witness. But not even Sam could forsee the future when her life becomes in jeopardy by a ruthless killer and she is once again finding redemption with the only man that matters...Nick! As more clues start mounting up, more murders occur, shocking everyone involved in the case including more attempts made on her life but as Sam follows the evidence, nothing will prepare her for the shocking truth of what it all means, but most importantly, when it leads her right into the path of a devastating secret so sinister, the shock alone was too much to bear!.........a great thriller by Miss Force......thank you.....♡♡
