Review
Not so much a diet as a new way of living. I've followed Michael's advice ever since my third bout of cancer and I have not looked back I lost 40lb and I'm now a size 10. I feel so much better. This approach is now part of my daily life. This diet changed my life. I lost 16kg (35lbs) in the first 8 weeks and I've lost another 6kg (13lbs) since. I was a borderline diabetic but I'm not anymore, in fact I'm healthier than I've ever been. Dr Mosley, one of the world's leading writers covering nutrition and health, does it again with a very informative and entertaining book. An important, easy to follow book which is full of surprising and effective weight loss tips. It should change a lot of lives for the better. This new book is full of fascinating information and is incredibly readable. I picked it up in something of a post-Christmas haze and couldn't put it down.

So I read this book for my own dietary needs mainly to keep weight off as I have lost a heap in the last year , it's such an eye opener and it makes sense. This book was recommended to me on a FB Group. I really couldn't put it down, particularly the section on eating food in a certain time frame of the day, very interesting.Pro's - well presented theory, plenty of examples and case studies given. Cons - can the regular person do this? Especially stage 1? That's not a criticism of the actual book though. I just don't know if the average Joe has the mental strength to see it through. I'll try it and update later.

Dr. Michael Mosley explains how you can achieve your weight loss chemical free and at your own pace. His 5:2 Diet was a smash hit worldwide and I think The Fast 800 will be as well.
According to the good doctor, 800 calories (3424 kilojoules) is much more sustainable than his original 500 (2140 kilojoules) calories.
The Meal Plans included in the book show plans for 3 meals or 2 meals (if you include a 16 hour fast) per day so you can choose your own way to go. The food is 'real' food although you do have the added option to buy from their store.
If, like me, you struggle to lose weight and keep it off, this could also be the way to go for you.
Happy reading. Annemarie

A comprehensive review of the "Fast 800" health management plan. The book is well researched and referenced (list provided), includes details of the program and how to modify it for your lifestyle, and includes a handy menu planner and recipe guide at the back. Looks like a tough program to follow, but it seems to have a lot of positives.

I'm a huge fan of the Fast Diet books. I read the original 5:2 and stuck to it for a really long time. I found it easy to manage and loved having a rule to follow. The Fast 800 is, obviously, similar and I found the additional research very interesting. I would actually recommend the original 5:2 book first and then move on to the Fast 800, simply because I found the first book more engaging. If you're not going to bother, though, then this could be the perfect starting point for your new life.

This book was easy to read and had scientific studies to back up the claims. I have long been a fan of low carb diets but this information gives another dimension to dieting and debunks many of the old myths about dieting. So not only is this about loosing weight but also reducing blood sugars. A great read and so informative. The recipes at the back give heaps of ideas.

My husband and I used the 5:2 several years ago when DR Mosley first wrote about it. Although we were not overweight, we were concerned with visceral fat. After a couple years, we fell off the 5:2 upon doing an extended overseas trip, not to return to it. However, we continued (mostly) with the TRE. Recently, we have gained a bit of weight, we read and started the fast 800.....feeling great with the weight loss and highly recommend this book, so supportive and encouraging ♥️🙏🏻

My wife and myself have followed the advice from the book and we have managed to loose weight and reduce our cloths sizes. We are also doing a lot of workout but we notice our best results when started the 5:2 fasting diet.

I have been determined for years to find a diet that works and works naturally
I am only 4 days into it and have a gut feeling that this is it, after at least 20 years of trying unsuccessfully to lose weight. Like much modern medicine most diet plans treat just the symptoms. This diet treats the cause. I am nearly 60 and was at the cusp of resigning myself to being fat until I die.
I have tried more diet regimes than you have fingers to count them on, plus a few I made up myself. So I can confidently say that this time I have feelings of relief (finally) and confidence that my obesity sickness is being cured.
If the diet sounds harsh, it is but it is also surprisingly easy!
I am now enjoying every bite of my delicious food with no desire to keep on eating all day, no more fear of feeling hungry, and no more carrying snacks in my handbag "just in case"
Thank you Dr Mosley
Addendum:
I lost a stone in three weeks going from 14.5 stone to 13.5
Then I lost the plot a bit over a couple of birthday celebrations and put 3lb back on. However it's been easy to get back on track. And I've started losing weight again.

Re-write of previous books
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 January 2019Verified Purchase
If you have never read any of the previous books, then it is a very good book. Practical advice that you can follow and the diet definetly works. However, if you have bought previous books then honestly dont bother. Its updated with some new research and basically saying have large gaps ie 8 or 12 hours between your first and last meal. Not worth purchasing the book for. Its is also fairly repetitive in that the same message is continuously repeated, you can skip pages as you have just read the same message again and again. You get the feeling this is done to bulk the book out. The recipes would have benefited from pictures. A shame, I really like Dr Mosley but feel this is just a cash cow project especially considering to join the website fast800 costs £99 ,! Maybe he had an expensive Christmas

Updated advice
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2018Verified Purchase
I've read most of Dr Michael Mosley's previous books and found this to be a good update. It provides a mixture of Michael's experience, the latest research and some real-life case studies as well as a recommended (but non-prescriptive) programme. Some of it is familiar and some advice has changed (e.g. up the calories on 5:2 to make it more achievable and to get more nutrients). It's quite a quick read as well (and half is made up of recipes but they sound tasty).
Michael Mosley has used the experience and knowledge gained over the last few years since The Fast Diet (5:2) plus I finished the book feeling quite motivated to get started.
In summary, if you've got a lot of weight to lose, try:
- 800 calories a day of a Mediterranean-style diet. Review your progress and goals after two weeks and either continue for up to twelve weeks or move to New 5:2.
- 5:2 until you reach your goals.
- Med-style eating in the main for maintenance (maybe with one fast day for health reasons and easier maintenance).
Other recommendations are included, such as time-restricted eating and exercise suggestions.
A lot of it will be familiar if you've read previous books, but it does provide updated research and is definitely worth a read if you want a boost and a little convincing to get started.
As another reviewer has said, there is some encouragement to go to their website. This was the same in previous books but unlike e.g. the blood sugar diet website you can't get to forums and some info unless you pay to go on their 12 week programme.

Wow - Instant weight loss
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 January 2019Verified Purchase
8lbs lost on week 1 of doing this. Sleep is deep and awesome and I've woken up each morning thinking, 'I feel really great'.
I'm following a time restricted diet of eating between 12PM-8PM which sounds severe, but really suits my waking/work pattern. Not a hunger pang or rumbly tummy in sight.
I stood on the scales in disbelief seeing my weight loss of 8lbs this morning (it's actually only day 5 of the first week).
Wow, just wow.

Practical health advice that works!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 January 2019Verified Purchase
I've followed Dr Mosley's work since watching the BBC Horizon documentary on fasting. I started intermittent fasting to become comfortable with being uncomfortable and avoiding eating poor food when travelling for business.
This latest book refines his advice based on the latest Scientific research. It is focused on the ideas of intermittent fasting (reducing your calorie consumption to 800 or less each day - which is surprisingly easy) and the Mediterranean diet (lots of Olive Oil, fruit and vegetables).
The book is full of plain English explanations of the latest research, and has practical instructions on how to use this diet yourself. There are also a lot of recipes for meals which fit into the diet.
Having used intermittent fasting over the past two years, I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to lose weight or increase their energy levels.
