Product description
Based on the best-selling novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones: The Board Game Second Edition lets 3-6 players take control of the great houses of Westeros in an epic struggle to claim the Iron Throne. The updated second edition brings a host of enhancements to your A Game of Thrones experience. It incorporates elements from previous expansions, including ports, garrisons, Wildling cards and Siege engines, while introducing welcome innovations. Convenient player screens will hide your underhanded dealings from prying eyes, while new Tides of Battle cards convey the uncertainty of war. This, along with updated graphics and a clarified ruleset, means the time has never been better to claim the Iron Throne. Board Game Second Edition includes 1 Rulebook and 1 Game Board, 138 Plastic Units, 105 Cards, 6 Player Screens, 266 Tokens and Overlays.

The first time playing with three friends did elicit some gasps of exasperation and furious page turning ('for an explanation, see page 28'), with quite a few difficult concepts to wade through. However, after the (very long) set up, and first couple of rounds, everyone started to enjoy the game.
Certainly after playing a couple of times it will undoubtedly pick up speed much quicker. A word of warning though: if you're all new to the game, then make sure you have some patient friends who are willing to give the game the time it deserves.
In terms of the actual contents in the box, everything is very well packaged and comes with handy ziplock bags that make keeping everything sorted much easier. All of the pieces are high quality, but you do have to spend some time popping all the cardboard pieces out. When everything is set up it can seem daunting, but you soon get to learn what everything does.
The rule book is the only thing that lets this game down. If it were easier to follow and get started, then this would easily be 5 stars. Perhaps that's just the price you pay for such a comprehensive and involving board game though.

It's one of the best strategy games I've played and after on Sunday I managed to convince my boardgame novice family to play and after a couple of rounds they really got into it.
I think the only downside is that the game doesn't come with storage boxes for all the pieces, I've put everything in ziploc bags for now but I'm keeping a look out for small boxes that I can put all of the card pieces into.

Lovely. The pieces are robust and the game is amazing.
I particularly like the way the board can be folded.
Not sure I like the holders, had to remove and buy my own.
Also the second edition hasn't got a lot more than the first (if any).
Additional star points for 3-4 player game play feels useless.

Expansions add more to the mix, the OOP storm of swords is the best version for 3-4 players and the upcoming mother of dragons expansion will bring a total of 8 players.
Not for the faint of heart, but if you get bored of risk's simplicity you'll love this.
