This book focuses on how a US family historian should research Irish genealogy, and this gives it a fresh approach over other works on the subject. It's clearly laid out and easy to follow with chapters on all the main subjects (census, civil, church, land, etc), research methods and useful case studies. The appendixes are particularly strong as a reference tool, not shying away from including "amateur" sites along with the big ones. Even as a professional genealogist, I have learned new information from this book. It is an essential shelf-addition for the hobbyist and professional alike.
Excellent book for anyone interested in Irish ancestry. I have been researching mine for a few years now and still found new hints and sources which have been very productive. Very easy to read too.
Even though I'm Canadian and this is more directed at American Irish there is good information on different resources. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to look into their Irish heritage.
Claire Santry is an excellent author. Her entire chapter on finding information about your ancestor where they emigrated to, which is essential information, is focussed entirely on the United States. I'm not American, so that was a waste.
