Product Description

Sometimes a cat has to man up.

Tom has been mostly cat for a long time, but when the witch who enslaved him dies, he has one last chance to become a man again and maybe to find love, too. He just needs to tell Cassie, a sensible girl who knows nothing about the witchy business all around her, that he's trapped in the body of the kitten she cuddles at night. But cats aren't known for their conversational skills, and a powerful warlock is determined to take Cassie for himself. To make things worse, Tom is rapidly running out of lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splashing in the Shallows 8 September 2015
By DrPat - Published on

Some books are deep, engrossing, life-changing works that take your life to a place it could never have existed before you read them. Others are about as deep as a rain puddle.

So while I love to read the intense mind-warpers, I have to acknowledge that sometimes it is just sheer fun to splash through the shallows. That was me last night as I sat down to read "The Familiar," a book I got for free because I nominated it on Kindle Scout. Three short hours later, I closed my Kindle, sated from playtime, and soaking wet to the knees.

I live with cats, so "Tom's" antics were recognizable. The man-turned-tomcat (plus sex slave) was playing it strictly for laughs, with no deeper issues (like cheating on your life partner, willingness to tolerate abuse, or even the dangers of letting pet kitties roam outside at will) to spoil the fun. I'm reaching even to think of problems Nojack might have introduced in her story, but did not.

Instead, the problems are a creepy peeping warlock, Tom's struggles to communicate with his new owner (a sweet young thing on the rebound from a broken relationship), and the girl's battle to clean up the magic supply business she inherited from her granny witch.

Don't look for anything except fun here! I will be watching for the next book in the "Bad Tom" series, ready by then for another gleeful dance through the puddles.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quirky paranormal with lots of potential 5 September 2015

The writing is smooth and polished, which makes the prose flow and the plot unfolds just as seamlessly.

The story has a cute premise told from the cat's POV. From the blurb, cover and opening I expected lightness and humor. For me the humor didn't happen often enough and occasional gritty realism yanked me out of the fantasy. Tom, a bespelled warlock, Cassie an unwitting witch were both likable but failed to develop the depth of character that would have drawn me deeper into their world.

This is the first in a planned series, so perhaps the leads will become more three dimensional as the books progress. (less)

5.0 out of 5 stars THAT OLD BLACK (CAT) MAGIC! 2 December 2015
By Mary Lou PagePrincess Hoffman - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
Series: Bad Tom #1
Category /Genre: Romantic Comedy, Paranormal Romance
Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content
Received from: gift from Kindle Press
Grammar/editing: A – near perfect

This is the first book in the Bad Tom series. They will need to be read in order.

I received this book as one of the voters through Kindle Scout – a program that asks the readers to vote on the books that will be published through Kindle Press. In exchange, the voters for the book each receive a copy if it is chosen for publication. I am so glad I was included in this vote and that it succeeded!

First I’ll say that I love the cover. It is whimsical and sweet and sets the tone for the story.

For someone who loves the movie Hocus Pocus and whose favorite character of the movie is Thackery (the cat), this book was immediately endearing. How does the young man feel about being a cat? What abilities change with the changing physique? I fell in love with Tom long before Cassie had figured out that her aunt’s pet was a little something more than a pet!

I loved hiding in this story – completely lost to the world as I know it and living the life that Cassie is finding to be uniquely different after inheriting her aunt’s potions shop. What if the magic were real and not just a con for the tourists?

This story does stand on its own and you could read it and call it quits, but there is still a semi-cliffhanger that begs for attention and continuation. I sincerely hope that Ms. Nojack will continue this series, because I must know what happens to Cassie and Tom!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and fun book! 2 January 2016

“Sheesh, witches!” Tom’s frustration with witches isn’t surprising since one member of the local coven did turn him into a cat years ago. Jill Nojack’s novel The Familiar: A Paranormal Romantic Comedy involves a number of plots and subplots including Tom’s metamorphosis, diabolical neighbors, love triangles (and parallelograms), and a little bit of murder. And let’s don’t even start on Granny Eunice, one of those nasty characters that you love to hate.
The novel is unique, thoroughly entertaining and so much fun. I looked forward to sitting down with this refreshing read every day when I got home from work. The Familiar and a glass of wine was the perfect start to every evening.
This was the first in a series, and I'm really looking forward to the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars That was fun! 7 February 2017

What a cute, quirky, fun story! No, it's not deep or life-changing, but it's an enjoyable story that pulls you into light-hearted fun, a little drama, some mystery, and eccentricity that only Ms. Nojack can illustrate with words.
