Product Description

In this classic tale of opposites attract, we meet Janie Drago and Falquen Forrester.

Janie is a fresh out of art college watercolorist, hoping to dive head first into Toronto’s art circuit and make a name for herself. To do that, she moves out of her childhood home in the suburbs to find a place in the city. After a few failed attempts, Janie’s search for a place of her own turns desperate.

Falquen is a moody bass player for the local Goth band, These Bones. Besides being a brilliant musician, he is also an up and coming painter with eccentric tastes. He enjoys living alone in his art studio above an artist’s supply shop, The Crypt.

Needing a little extra cash, he very reluctantly takes out an ad, renting out the spare room in his apartment. Janie's got one last place to check out, which just happens to be Falquen's Nest. Fate brings these two polar opposite personalities together but can they find enough common ground to live with each other, maybe even fall in love?

I loved this. Great characters with very real reactions to each other. The right ratio of sweet and romantic and sexy and conflicted. As I reached the end of each chapter, I just wanted to keep reading. I'll definitely be reading more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Electrified Guitars for Falquen's Nest 5 February 2016
By Backstage Blogs - Published on

Over the past few months, since first discovering Maria Bernard, I have been slowly devouring her entire catalog, savoring each one and putting several books between each so that I will be able to enjoy the first reads longer. I very rarely re-read anything, but Maria's books, much like her rock (and goth) stars are just so warm and comforting. When real life is dragging me down, I know I can count on her books to give me all the warm fuzzies and happily ever afters I am searching for. That almost makes them sound boring, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It is never that simple for the good girl and the "bad" boy, but you can count on having a sweet love story behind it all when Maria is at the helm.

Falquen's Nest is the first book of the These Bones series, focusing on the goth band These Bones, particularly moody bassist and dark artist Falquen. Tall, dark and handsome is an understatement, as long as your vision of TD&H includes long hair and guyliner. He's moody and sullen, and worried about making the payments on the building that houses his art supply store and his personal residence above it. He half heartedly places an ad in the newspaper for a roommate.

Janie Drago has recently graduated college with a degree in art and reuses to return to her parents home in the suburbs. She has been staying with her best friend Charlotte, and Charlotte's new husband, John, but she knows she has over stayed her welcome. After following up on several rather scary ads for rooms for rent, and with Charlotte's encouragement that the address is in the arts district, she has a good, if a bit desperate, feeling about the final ad. Love at first sight it certainly is not, but there is something very endearing about the desperation that motivates them to become roommates.

The chemistry between the two quickly becomes apparent, as does their complete misunderstanding of each other. Though Janie is 23 and a college graduate, it is quickly very apparent that she is beyond a bit naive and scared of pretty much everything even if she is loathe to admit it. Falquen has his own demons to fight, especially in the form of his absolute witch of an ex, Moira. I picture her as a much more malicious version of a combination of X rated versions of Malificient and Cruelly deVille. She seriously creeped me out more than any villainess in recent memory. And I truly don't have words for her two sidekicks. But to balance them out, we have Falquen's extremely charming twin brother, Gray, and the other band members, Jesse and Darian. Swoon. I am so looking forward to all of their stories, especially Gray's and Jesse's. Luckily, I have waited long enough that the entire series is out, as I am going to have a very hard time resisting binging on the entire series.

I have really debated my star rating on this one. Overall, I think it is obvious that I loved it, but a couple of things have nagged at me - mostly the speed of a couple of changes at the end. Perhaps I just wanted more of Falquen and Janie, but without getting into spoiler territory, a certain change of heart, though perfectly timed, seemed just a bit abrupt, which is why I finally settled on 4.5 stars. And I certainly hope that we get more of a big event teased in a future book, and I really hope we get more background on Falquen and Gray's background. Overall though, I absolutely adore all these characters and I eagerly look forward to more!

For adult audiences only for the most explicit sexual scenes I have seen in Ms. Bernard's works so far. Certainly not a complaint - she writes them very well, but, not for younger audiences. Highly recommended, as any of her books are.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it! 30 January 2016

Ok I have to confess, I am about as far from Goth as I can get. But I love rock stars. I am so freaking glad I bought this book! Falquen has advertised a room for rent in a half hearted attempt to find a roommate. Falquen is a bassist in a band, an artist who paints skulls and loves the dark. He also owns the art supply store below his apartment. Janie is an art school grad who is afraid of the dark, paints kitten and flowers with water color and is desperate to move out of her friend's house. Boy meet girl.

The beauty of this gem of a novel is how the author captures the emotions of the characters. The characters are written in such a way that you want to be part of their world. You want to be Janie not just read about her. You want to know Falquen's back story. The author doesn't have to tell you that Falquen is sad or mad or frustrated, the reader already knows or feels it because the author developed the characters so well.

I loved it. And don't get me started on the secondary characters. I want to know every single one of their stories. And let me tell you how refreshing it is read and a real guy not some overbearing unrealistic unobtainable alpha. But don't get me wrong, Falquen has some fantastic alpha traits. All I can say is stop being so mainstream and give these Gothstars a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maria has another winner. 27 May 2015

Oh, my eloquent friend, you have done it again! A wonderful romance with a twist. A lovely Goth artist and rockstar, Falquen is tall, dark and handsome. Janie is also an artist. She is in need of a place to live and answers an ad for a roommate. While waiting to meet the man she hopes to rent from, Janie wanders into the artist supply store the apartment is above. There she is startled by a very tall, dark man in black. He is rude, but so gorgeous. He is Falquen her new landlord. The two have a bit of trouble getting along , at first, but soon Janie has captured his heart. Not to mention his twin brother, Grey, and the rest of the band. A great new series from a brilliant author. Can't wait for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ok so glued to Maria Bernard's book again 9 February 2017

I really enjoyed this book. At first I thought the Janie (the main female character in this story) was childish but then she grew on me. Her clumsiness made me laugh. Her fears although irrational at times made me laugh too but I think that they were related to the sheltered life she had from over protective parents. I loved Falquen's. Very sexy & loving. You would never know it from how the story turned out. Anyhow it's a good book. I recommend reading it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another sweet and touching love story! 7 July 2016

Maria Bernard has a knack for writing love stories that touch your heart in the sweetest way possible. This book has a beautiful male lead, a sweet and innocent lead female and lovable side characters. I love to be Able to mix up the dark with the light books and Maria never disappoints! This is also a book about not judging a book by its cover. Excepting that people can be different on the outside but we are all the same inside, we just need to be loved and excepted for who we are. I highly recommend this book!
