4.0 out of 5 stars Move over Brother Cadfael

Ellis Peters, the renowned author of the Brother Cadfael mysteries, also happens to be the author of FALLEN INTO THE PIT, featuring Police Sergeant George Felse.

This book is the first of the Felse mystery series and a delight to read.

The focus of this mystery is the death of German displaced person Helmut Schauffler, who has been an irritant to many Comerford residents. There's no love lost for the victim in this British community. As George Felse works through the sparse clues and the crowd of suspects, he observes that the presence of an unsolved murder in a small community creates a crack in the community that cannot be ignored.

Felse has another challenge: his 14-year-old son Dominic discovered the body and has an intense interest in the investigation.

Peters' lovely and thoughtful prose shines in this book. I never thought I would say it, but I enjoyed this more than I have her 12th century Cadfael Chronicles.
