I enjoyed all three books in this series. All well written and plausible historically. I found the pace of this book better than the previous two, without so much of the action being re-told from different characters' viewpoints, which, for me, slowed things down in the previous books. I had two issues with this final instalment, which prevent me giving 5 stars. The first was the content of the author's note, which appears at the beginning of the book, before chapter 1. This sets out the sketchy historical facts within which the author has worked to create his story. What spoiled it for me was, literally, a spoiler. It revealed one of the key characters was assassinated. This is in the historical record. As I'm no expert on this period of Egyptian history this was unknown to me before I started reading the novels. It completely ruined my enjoyment of this last book as every time the tension started to build I recalled that the author's note had already told me this character was due to meet a sticky end. Why not put the author's note at the end and avoid the spoiler altogether? My second problem is a bit of plot which I didn't feel was explained. SPOILER ALERT ... Don't read on if you haven't finished reading the book ...
The war between Setnakht and Tausret starts because a character tries to kill Setnakht having been told Tausret will reward him with gold and career advancement. Unless I completely missed it, we never find out who the mysterious character is who feeds the would-be assassin with these lies. Tausret has promised no such thing. It doesn't appear to have been Ament, so who was it? I was working on a theory of my own that it was Setnakht's son Ramesses, who wanted to provoke war since his father refused at this stage. But I don't think we ever found out. I found this frustrating as it's the point at which the whole story turns.
